Eagles
(4-1, 4-1 GLIAC)
     AU scored 40 or more points for the third consecutive game. The last time that was done was 1987. The 1987 team scored 144 points in that stretch. The 2007 Eagles have scored 160 points over their last three games…the Eagles blocked two punts against Northern Michigan and those blocks led to a pair of touchdowns. A pair of redshirt freshmen – Alan Dunson (Columbus, OH/Walnut Ridge) and Joe Horn (Waynesfield, OH) – blocked the punts…senior running back Jon Schroeder (Avon Lake, OH) scored his ninth touchdown in the last three games. Schroeder has 11 touchdowns this season. The school single-season record for touchdowns is 17, established by Ray Novotny in 1929…freshman tailback Jaman Javey (Euclid, OH) rushed for a career-high 132 yards and two touchdowns against Northern Michigan. Javey had gone over 100 yard rushing in each of the last two games. He’s averaged 6.9 ypc., over that stretch…Ashland’s defense has forced five turnovers over the last two games…the Eagles are 4-1 in GLIAC play for the first time since 1999.

     The Bulldogs bounced back from last week’s tough road loss at Michigan Tech in a big way with an impressive 48-14 triumph over the Gannon Golden Knights in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) football action Saturday (Oct. 13) at Gannon University Field in Erie, Pa... The win came in FSU’s first-ever visit to Gannon University Field. The Bulldogs built a 38-0 halftime lead and increased the advantage to 41-0 after three quarters of play... Senior quarterback C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa), who did not play in the second half after leading the Bulldogs to a 38-0 halftime advantage, ran for a game-high 122 yards on 13 carries (9.4 avg.) and scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half. He also completed three passes for 67 yards. Despite not playing the final 30 minutes, Van Wieren led all players in all-purpose yardage. He found the endzone on FSU’s opening offensive series’ from 14-yards away and added another 28-yard scoring run near the end of the first quarter... Junior middle linebacker Kevin Noe (Orleans/Belding) posted a team-best 10 tackles for the Bulldogs... FSU’s defense limited the Knights to 218 total yards, including only 76 yards in the opening half. The Bulldogs finished the game with 11 tackles for loss, which resulted in minus -53 yards. FSU also had five sacks, forced a fumble and blocked a punt.

Oilers

     The Oilers posted a 38-22 win over Mercyhurst on Homecoming…It was their first victory on Homecoming since the 2002 season when the defeated Michigan Tech 42-23…Senior running back Joel McDaniel recorded his third 200 yard game of his career with 212 yards rushing…He also scored a career-high four touchdowns…Red-shirt sophomore quarterback Jonathan Bell also ran well, accumulating a career-high 177 yards rushing on 23 carries…Findlay had two 100 yard rushers in the same game for the first time since Michael Simpson (153) and Derrick Braziel (121) did it in a 41-0 win over Northern Michigan on September 11, 2004…As a team, the Oilers racked up a season-high 408 rushing yards and a season-high 458 total yards…Senior linebacker Corey Redmond racked up a career-high 13 tackles in the win…The victory was the Oilers third on the season, more than they had all of last year.

Golden Knights

     Gannon dropped to 0-7 with a 48-14 loss to Ferris State in week seven … the Golden Knights trailed 38-0 at halftime before scoring 10 second-half points … Gannon has scored 41 of its 79 points this season in the fourth quarter … the Golden Knights have allowed at least 48 points in six of their seven games … Alton Kenner (Buffalo, N.Y./Turner-Carroll) led all players on both teams with 11 tackles, making five stops in the third quarter … Jon Richardson (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) rushed for a career-high 71 yards against Ferris State … Zach Boedicker (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) completed 76 percent (16-21) of his passes for 77 yards and one touchdown … Vinnie DeLuca (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) recorded his first career touchdown reception after moving to wide-out from quarterback this season … Tom Johnson (Plymouth, Mich./Detroit Central Catholic), who started the season as a tight end, was Gannon’s second-leading tackler against Ferris State with nine stops.

     Sophomore QB Brad Iciek (Grandville, Mich.) completed 20-of-26 passes for 283 yards and three TDs against the top-ranked defense in the GLIAC to help Grand Valley State to a 41-17 victory over Indianapolis before a homecoming crowd of 12,080. With the win, Grand Valley State tied the NCAA DII record for consecutive wins with 34. Iciek leads the GLIAC with a pass efficiency rating of 184.34. Grand Valley State improved to 17-1 all-time versus Indianapolis... Grand Valley State has won a school-record 34 straight games overall. The Lakers’ current streak is second longest in NCAA DII history and is the longest active winning streak in college football. Hillsdale College won 34 straight from 1954-57. GVSU’s last loss was Nov. 27, 2004 at North Dakota in the NCAA Northwest Regional final. The Lakers’ last regular season loss was 10/23/04 to Northwood (35-14)... The Lakers’ 92 victories since the 2000 campaign ranks second in college football. GVSU is 91-9 in its last 100 games ... Grand Valley State is 59-3 in its last 62 GLIAC games. The Lakers have won 26 straight GLIAC games dating back to the 2004 season. Ferris State holds the league record for consecutive wins with 27.

     The Chargers equaled their win total from each of the past two seasons in its 35-21 win over Wayne State Saturday afternoon…HC is undefeated at home this season and is 9-1 at Muddy Waters Stadium since the end of the 2005 season… Hillsdale has scored at least 30 points in each of its past eight games, a school record…In the team’s four home games this season, Hillsdale has scored a total of 179 points, compared to 52 for the opposition … The Chargers still have two home games remaining on the schedule…Senior wide receiver Nick Gurica tied his own school record with 13 receptions in the game…he also had 13 catches against Michigan Tech on Sept. 29…Gurica caught three touchdown passes and had 167 receiving yards…Senior quarterback Mark Nicolet passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns, his sixth straight 300-yard passing game, also a school record…For the season, Nicolet has 23 touchdown passes and just two interceptions … One more win and Hillsdale will clinch its first winning season since 1999…Alex Wojcik (13 tackles) and Cody Henderson (10 tackles) each had a career-high in tackles in the game…Senior Matt Vanover had a 62-yard punt in the game, his third 60-plus yard kick of the season.

      Indianapolis felled to 4-2 in the conference and became the 34th straight team to fall to top-ranked Grand Valley, as the Hounds were on the losing end of a 41-17 score … David Link set a career high with 139 rushing yards, while adding two scores … Link’s rushing total is the highest by a Greyhound this season … UIndy picked-up three Laker fumbles, one more than its total number of takeaways coming into the game … The Hounds scored 10 second-half points, seven more than Grand Valley had allowed all season … Junior running back Eric Wright did not reach 100 yards rushing for the first time this year … Wright also failed to reach the endzone for the first time this season … Jace Morrison is 21-for-21 in PATs this season … UIndy held the ball for 31:29 in the loss and has won the time-of-possession battle in all seven games this season … Johnson has averaged 88.6 receiving yards in the last three games.

     Mercyhurst allowed 408 yards on the ground as Findlay defeated the Lakers 38-22 Saturday. The loss snapped a two-game win streak over the Oilers…With 67 rushing yards, junior running back Richard Stokes became just the second player in program history to rush for over 2,000 career yards. He now has 2,045 on the ground…Ten different players caught at least one pass, including tight end Josh Szeluga, who had six catches for a career-high 90 yards…Quarterbacks Mitch Phillis and Joe Laffey combined for 56 pass attempts, the most the team has had this year…Adam Brown had 16 tackles in the contest, the highest single game total since Jimmy Kokrak had 19 against Indianapolis on Oct. 22, 2005…Tim Herbener added seven tackles to go with the team’s lone interception and lone sack of the contest…Mercyhurst recovered its second on-side kick of the year…The Lakers are now 3-2 on the road in 2007, better than the 0-5 mark the team had in 2006.

     Junior Marvin Atkins (Chicago, Ill./Walther Lutheran) improved his season rushing total to 649 yards with 144 on 34 carries last Saturday (Oct. 13) at Saginaw Valley State. The 6-0, 200-pound tailback owns 525 yards in the last four games … Junior wide receiver Keith White (Rhinelander, Wis.) racked up five receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown at SVSU. White owns 33 catches for 597 yards and six scores on the 2007 campaign … Senior Kirk Williams (DeWitt, Mich.) caught three passes for 80 yards last Saturday to move into a tie for third all-time in career receptions at Michigan Tech. Williams’ 124 catches is tied with Don Lukas (1975-78) … Senior safety Cheyne Nelson (Victorville, Calif.) added eight more tackles at Saginaw Valley State to run his season total to a team-high 69 … Michigan Tech has played eight regular season games — five on the road (2-3 record) and three at home (2-1 record). The Huskies play their final regular season road game next Saturday (Oct. 20) at Northern Michigan before closing out at home against Gannon and Findlay.

      Senior QB Buddy Rivera is inching closer to breaking the all-time total offense record at NMU, he currently has 6,783 yards of total offense as the record is 6,807…Rivera currently has 44 touchdown passes and needs two more TD passes to set a new NMU record…The 324 yards of total offense the ‘Cats had against Ashland was a season low…Saturday’s game at Ashland was the first game this season the ‘Cats did not hold onto the ball longer than its opponent, NMU had the ball for 24:51 while AU held the ball for 35:09…Ben Hempel rushed for his first rushing touchdown on an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter…Three players have 10 or the 11 receiving touchdowns, Zach Nichols has five, Dan Elmore three and Fred Wells two…Mark Bossuah has half of the rushing touchdowns on the season with five out of the 10…Bossuah’s 44 yards rushing against AU was his second lowest of the season, but he still leads NMU with 786 yards (131.0 avg/g)...Nicholas Bloch had 12 total tackles against AU as 11 were solo, he leads the team with 58 total tackles (35 solo and 23 assisted)…Anthony Leandri is a perfect 17-17 in extra points and leads the team with 32 points as he is 5-8 in field goals.

      Saginaw Valley defeated Michigan tech at home for the sixth straight time…QB Chris Dougherty connected on two passes that each went for 74 yards, one was a touchdown … Dougherty’s 313 yards passing moved him with in 460 yards of first place all time in career yards passing…Derek Volmering’s 16 tackles moved him into the top 20 on the all time tackles list…Saginaw Valley is off next week and returns to action on the October 27, 2007.

     Sophomore running back Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) broke two school records and tied another at Hillsdale … Bell became WSU’s all-time leader in touchdowns scored (40) and points scored (240), while tying the career rushing touchdown mark (37) … he also went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season and 3,000 for his career in only 18 games … Bell also moved past Elbert Richmond (1950-52) into fourth place in career all-purpose yards with 3,738 (207.7 per game) … he also became the first player in the 90-year history of WSU football to record at least 100 points in two different seasons … junior Dante Dunn (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) has 38 career kickoff returns for 990 yards and needs 10 more yards to pass Chad Fietsam (1984-87) for third place in career kickoff return yards … Dunn’s average of 29.7 yards this season is on pace to eclipse the single-season school mark of 27.50 set by Don Robinson in 1971 … senior linebacker Alan Guy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) moved past John Taylor (1982-85) into 10th place in career tackles with 276 … Guy also tied Eric Ruth’s 10th-place mark of 32 career tackles for loss … WSU had two rushers go over 100 yards in a game for the first time since Craig Duppong and Randy Hutchison surpassed the century mark on Aug. 30, 2003, against Gannon... junior safety Steve Wisniewski (Madison Hts., Mich./Lamphere) had 11 tackles at Hillsdale, his fifth game this season in double digits) … in two career games versus Hillsdale, Bell has rushed 80 times for 413 yards and six touchdowns along with 527 all-purpose yards.
