Bulldogs

     Ferris State University senior receiver Mike Guevara (Oakland, Calif./Oxnard) caught a game-high six passes for 82 total yards and scored the Bulldogs’ only two touchdowns of the contest in a 40-12 league setback at Michigan Tech Saturday (Oct. 6) in Houghton, Mich. The 5-10 Guevara caught a 38-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa) in the second quarter before hauling in a 19-yard TD pass in the fourth frame. He also returned two punts for 26 yards (13.0 avg.) in the outing and finished the game with a team-best 108 all-purpose yards... Senior outside linebacker Jordan Moore (Ada/Lowell) and junior middle linebacker Kevin Noe (Orleans/Belding) both netted a team-best 11 total tackles in the setback... The loss snapped a two-game league winning streak for the Bulldogs... Ferris also suffered its fifth-straight series’ loss to Michigan Tech and it was FSU’s fourth consecutive defeat at Sherman Field.

     The Oilers dropped their second straight game on Saturday, losing 44-7 on the road at Saginaw Valley State…The Oilers remained winless against the Cardinals in eight tries…Findlay, who had not thrown an interception all season long, had two in the loss…The Oilers also turned the ball over eight times in the game, doubling their total from the previous five contests…Senior linebacker Dion Harvey had four tackles for a loss in the game giving him 10.5 for the season…It is a team-high and career-high for Harvey.

     Gannon dropped to 0-6 for the second consecutive season after a 56-21 loss at Wayne State … the Golden Knights trailed 23-0 before cutting the deficit to 33-21 … Gannon has allowed at least 49 points in five of its six games … true freshman Bob Bartley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) threw for a season-high 219 yards and two touchdowns, including scoring strikes of 35 and 71 yards … Jarrett Beavers (Southfield, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) recorded his first touchdown as a Golden Knight with a two-yard run in the second quarter … Bartley’s 71-yard touchdown pass to Ronald Keels (Kenmore, N.Y./Cardinal O’Hara) was the fifth-longest passing play in school history … redshirt freshman Corey Bradley (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) had two catches for 19 yards prior to the Wayne State game, but finished Saturday’s contest with four receptions for 84 yards, both game-highs … true freshman Justin Reaves (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) posted season-highs in solo tackles (6) and total tackles (8), surpassing both marks by three.

     The Grand Valley State defense has scored a TD in 4-of-5 games played this season...The Lakers’ 381 rushing yards vs. Mercyhurst was the Lakers’ highest rushing total since a 395-yard outing at Mercyhurst on Oct. 21, 2000...GVSU has averaged 50.0 points per game in the Lakers’ seven meetings with Mercyhurst...GVSU scored 50 points or more four times in eight games... GVSU has the nation’s longest winning streak in college football at 33 games. The 33-game winning streak is the second longest in D-II history, just one behind Hillsdale College’s record of 34 straight wins (1954-57)...GVSU is now 91-9 in its last 100 games and 90-5 in their last 95 games...GVSU is 58-3 in its last 61 GLIAC games and the Lakers have won 25 straight league games dating back to the 2004 season...The Lakers are 53-2 when being ranked number one in the country...WR Brandon Carr moved into a tie for 10th on the all-time NCAA DII passes defended list with a pass breakup in the first quarter. Carr now has 42 pass breakups in his career...Senior CB Bill Brechin has set a GVSU single-season record for interception return yards with 142 (2 Int. Lucius Hawkins previously held the record with 128 yards in 2004...GVSU entered the Mercyhurst game as one of two teams in NCAA D-II to rank in the top six in both Passing Efficiency Offense (6th-173.59) and Passing Efficiency Defense (6th-75.2). Tuskegee ranks 5th offensively and 2nd on defense...The Lakers are also one of three teams to rank in the top 10 in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The Lakers rank 10th in scoring offense (42.3) and 7th in scoring defense (11.3). Catawba (Off-6th/Def-7th) and Valdosta State (Off-3rd/Def-10th) also rank in the top 10.

     The University of Indianapolis turned the tables on the Hillsdale College football team, generating a last-minute touchdown drive to pull out a 34-30 win at the Greyhounds’ homecoming game Saturday night…On Oct. 7, 2006, the Chargers scored a touchdown with less than two minutes left in its homecoming game for a 14-13 win…Each of the past four meetings between these schools have been decided by eight points or less…Senior quarterback Mark Nicolet passed for more than 300 yards for the fifth straight game, a school record…he now has 20 touchdown passes for the season, just five shy of the school record of 25 set by Mike Gatt in 1985 … Gatt’s record included four playoff games that season …Senior wide receiver Aaron Waldie increased his season totals to 40 catches for 810 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns…He sits one shy of tying the school record for touchdown catches in a single season, also set in 1985 by Dave Mifsud (12)…The Chargers have now scored 30 or more points in seven straight games, dating back to the 2006 season finale…Hillsdale has lost seven straight road games, with its last win away from Hillsdale coming on Sept. 2, 2006 at Gannon University…The Chargers are 12-8 in their last 20 games overall…Hillsdale is averaging 43 points per game so far this season…Hillsdale has intercepted 12 passes this season, after Alex Wojcik and Tom Korte picked off passes on Saturday…Nicolet has only thrown two interceptions all season…Mark Petro made a career-best three field goals in the game, scoring 12 points overall.

Greyhounds

     Casey Gillin registed new career highs in passing yards (402), completions (33), attempts (49) and tied a career mark with four TD tosses … Gillin found eight different receivers in the win … Gillin has already thrown for 14 TDs this season, just three shy of his total from all of last season … Eric Wright has scored in all six Greyhound games this season … The junior running back has also accounted 100+ yards of total offense in each contest, garnering 126 total yards (86 rush, 40 receiving) against Hillsdale … The Greyhound defense snuffed out every third down opportunity for Hillsdale, making the Chargers 0-for-9 in that category for the game … The Hounds have surrendered just 20 successful third-down conversions all season (26.0 percent- best in GLIAC) … UIndy held the ball for 37:12 in the win, and have held the time of possession advantage in five straight games … The Hounds control the clock on average 34:37 each game, easily the top mark in the league … After not recording a TD reception in his three prior years, Seth Pickett has caught a scoring pass in each of his past two home games … Nick Johnson totaled 88 receiving yards for the second straight week (career high).

     After scoring 40 points in four consecutive weeks, Mercyhurst was held to just one fourth-quarter touchdown in a 59-7 loss to No. 1 Grand Valley State Saturday…Mercyhurst outgained Grand Valley State in the first quarter 101-96 but trailed 14-0 after being stopped on four plays inside the Grand Valley four-yard line and giving up a touchdown on a four-yard drive following an interception…Richard Stokes average 5.7 yards per carry on 11 rushes and back-up Ben Jennings averaged 9.3 yards per carry on six carries and had Mercyhurst’s only touchdown of the game…Stokes became Mercyhurst’s all-time leader in carries with 482 and also went over 500 career receiving yards on a 29-yard pass reception in the first quarter. He needs 22 yards rushing to become the first player in program history to have 2,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving in his career…With his 63 yards rushing against Grand Valley, Stokes now has 735 on the season, moving him into fifth place on the Mercyhurst single-season chart.

     Michigan Tech won its fifth consecutive Homecoming contest with a 40-12 victory over Ferris State last Saturday (Oct. 6). The Huskies are 2-1 at home this season and 14-4 at Sherman Field since the start of the 2004 season … Sophomore Bobby Slowik (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown vs. Ferris State last Saturday (Oct. 6). It was Michigan Tech’s first punt return for a touchdown since Dominique Moultrie returned one 84 yards against Northern Michigan on Sept. 22, 2001. It was also the Huskies’ first special teams return of any kind since a kickoff return by Jeff Dettwiler against Grand Valley State on Oct. 27, 2001 … Michigan Tech’s four interceptions were just one short of the school record of five, set Nov. 3, 1979, against Minnesota State Mankato … Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another against Ferris State... The sophomore has accounted for 19 touchdowns this season (12 passing, nine rushing) and needs 10 more in four games to break the school record of 28 set by Dan Mettlach in 2004 … Senior DaVaughn Dixon (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), who is a four-year starter at cornerback for the Huskies, registered his first career interception vs. Ferris State.

     The Wildcats picked up its first win of the season on Homecoming at NMU…This week the ‘Cats are back on the road to face Ashland on Saturday…Mark Bossuah for the second time this season rushed for over 200 yards as he had 205 yards on 42 carries (career high) and scored twice…Last year Bossuah had a total of 428 yards with six touchdowns, this season he currently has 742 yards with five touchdowns…Buddy Rivera currently has 6,615 yards of total offense, the NMU career record is 6,807 yards…NMU had the edge in team stats over the Timberwolves, first downs (23-17), rushing (282-223), passing (117-61), total offense (399-284) and time of possession (33:58-26:02)…The 60 rushing attempts was a season high…NMU was 11-16 in third down conversions (68.75 percent) for a season high…Anthony Leandri has converted all 14 of his extra point attempts…The four sacks and six tackles-for-loss were both a season high…Four players had one sack each (Nathan Yelk, Nicholas Bloch, Mike Mahloch and Jacob Reimer)…The same four players had at least one tackle-for-loss…Yelk and Reimer each had two tackles-for-loss…Yelk ended the game with seven total tackles (six solo and one assisted), one sack (-6 yards) and two tackles-for-loss (-10 yards).

     Northwood fell to 3-3 on the season with a 28-18 loss at Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon ... Torris Childs (N. Chicago, Ill.) became the 13th player in school history to reach the 2,000 yard rushing mark for his career ... Childs now has 2,066 yards for his career ... He finished with 95 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns against Northern Michigan ... A week after hold the ball for 15 minutes more than Saginaw Valley, Northwood had the ball for nearly eight minutes less than Northen Michigan ... Northwood is off this week - they will host Grand Valley Oct. 20.

      Senior quarterback Chris Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) threw for 281 yards to move within 499 yards of second place all time in career passing yards…He completed 21-33 passes and had four touchdowns...Senior wide receiver Ric Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) caught his 32nd career touchdown pass against Findlay and finished the game with four catches for 126-yards...Derek Volmering’s (Harbor Beach, Mich.) nine tackles moved him into the top 25 all-time tackles list for SVSU, he ranks 22 all-time and is just seven short of cracking the top-20…Junior Jeremy Burr (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) kicked a career-long 41-yard field goal against the Findlay and is now 5-of-5 this season...With the win against Findlay, the Cardinals moved to 8-0 all-time in the series that began in 2000.

     Wayne State scored the fifth most points in school history (56) before the sixth largest crowd in stadium history (4,823) ... sophomore quarterback Trent Pohl (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) combined with true freshman wide receiver David Mosley (Detroit, Mich./Oak Park) on a 86-yard scoring toss, the fourth longest in school history ... the Warriors rushed 60 times for 308 yards, the most yardage in 13 years (330 at St. Joseph’s on Sept. 10, 1994) ... the 509 yards of total offense was the 10th highest mark in school history ... WSU has scored at least 50 points in a game twice this season, marking the first time in school history ... the 56 points for a Homecoming game was the most since a 61-29 win over Washington (Mo.) in 1968, in the first game at WSU Stadium ... sophomore running back Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) had four rushing touchdowns in a game for the fourth time in his career ... his last TD tied him with Pierre Brown (1998-2001) for first place on the WSU charts with 38 career touchdowns ... Pohl passed for 201 yards, a season-high and almost equaled his previous best of 205 set last year at Gannon ... both senior Chris Alsina (Beaumont, Calif.) and freshman Ed Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) extended their reception streaks to 11 and six games, respectively.
