 For the first time since 1997 Ashland has defeated two ranked teams in the same season. Saturday, Ashland defeated Northwood, ranked 23rd in the country. In this year’s season opener, the Eagles downed Saginaw Valley State, ranked 25th at the time… AU’s 54 points Saturday against NU represents Ashland’s largest offensive outburst since scoring 59 points against Ferris State in 1998…the Eagles had 587 yards of total offense against NU That’s the most total offense by AU since rolling up 594 yards against Northern Michigan in 1994…both AU wide receivers, seniors David Ziegelhofer (Lexington, OH) and Brandon Gilmore (Mansfield, OH) - had over 100 yards receiving Saturday. Gilmore caught 8 passes for 162 yards and Ziegelhofer had 7 catches for 164 yards…senior running back Jon Schroeder (Avon Lake, OH) scored four rushing touchdowns in a game for the second time in his career. Schroeder had TD runs of 1, 2, 1 and 2 yards. His last four-TD game came at Gannon in the final game of last season… senior defensive back Justin Hood (Youngstown, OH/Chaney) got the Eagles their first turnover of the season when he picked off a pass…sophomore Derek Riedel (Bay Village, OH) punted four times and averaged 51.2 yards per punt against NU. Riedel’s longest punt measured 65 yards. Two of Riedel’s punts touched down inside the 20-yardline.

Bulldogs

  A late field goal by FSU junior kicker Jim Yates (Goshen, Ind.) split the uprights from 41 yards away with only three seconds left to play as the Bulldogs upset the previously unbeaten Hillsdale Chargers 44-41 in GLIAC action Saturday. The victory was also FSU’s first over the Chargers since the 2004 campaign. Hillsdale narrowly held a 35-34 edge at halftime following a high-scoring first half. The score would have been tied at halftime, however, a Yates PAT try with only 29 seconds left in the half was blocked... Senior H-back Kirk Covey (Cedar Springs) ran for a personal career-high 59 yards on six carries and scored his first collegiate touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs. All of his rushing yardage came in the final 15 minutes of action... Senior flanker Robert Miller (Carson, Calif.) had a productive all-around game with 127 rushing yards, 31 receiving yards and 60 return yards in the contest. Miller carried the ball 17 times for 127 yards and two scores while adding 31 receiving yards on a team-best two catches. In the contest, Miller tallied 218 all-purpose yards and averaged 7.5 yards per rush.

Oilers

  The Oilers defeated Wayne State on the road 35-28 in overtime for their first GLIAC win of the year…As a team on offense, the Oilers rushed the ball 78 times for 398 yards and gained 22 of their 29 first downs on the ground…Both statistics narrowly missed out on school records as Findlay carried the ball 81 times against Anderson University in 1977 and gained 24 rushing first downs against Kentucky State University in 1990…Senior running back Joel McDaniel set a new school record for carries in a game, running the ball 42 times en route to a career-high 229 yards…His previous career-high was 203 yards against Gannon during the 2005 season…He also scored two touchdowns…The Oilers also controlled the clock, keeping the ball for a near school record time of 40:26…Findlay also had 22 rushing first downs, three shy of breaking the school record in a game.

  Gannon dropped to 0-4 after a hard-fought 49-28 loss to local rival Mercyhurst in the annual “Battle for the Niagara Cup” … the Golden Knights went toe-to-toe in every quarter except being out-scored 14-0 in the third frame … Gannon out-rushed Mercyhurst 288-207, marking the first time the team has out-rushed it opponent since out-gaining Findlay on October 21, 2006 … it marked Gannon’s highest single-game team rushing total since posting 321 yards against Tiffin on October 12, 2002 … true freshman Zach Boedicker (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) made his first career start at quarterback … Boedicker rushed for 224 yards, but was credited with 184 yards after losing 40 on four sacks … Boedicker posted the ninth-highest single-game rushing total in school history and highest since Ron Bailey rushed for 196 yards against Tiffin on October 11, 2003 … true freshman Matthew Neal-Mink (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) recorded a season-high 11 tackles … Neal-Mink has improved his single-game tackle total in all four games this season … Chris Murphy (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) made his first career interception in the first quarter … Boedicker and true freshman Justin Reaves (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) each recorded their first career touchdowns, Reaves scoring on a 44-yard fumble return in the second quarter.

  Grand Valley State picked off five passes versus Michigan Tech on Saturday, the Lakers’ highest single-game total since picking off six passes versus Northeastern Illinois in 1977...GVSU returned two interceptions for touchdowns for the first time in school history. Bill Brechin recorded the fourth longest return for a touchdown (99 yards) in Laker football history in the third quarter versus MTU, while Corey Edwards returned his interception 61 yards for a score...GVSU has won a school-record 31 straight games overall. The Lakers’ current streak is tied for third longest in NCAA DII history. GVSU’s last loss was Nov. 27, 2004 at North Dakota in the NCAA Northwest Regional final.

  The Chargers saw their season-opening three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday night, 44-41 at Ferris State…Hillsdale scored more than 40 points in a game for the fourth straight time, a school record…The 85 combined points in the game are the most in the 61-year history of games between Ferris State and Hillsdale…Senior quarterback Mark Nicolet threw for more than 300 yards for the third straight week…He is now in fifth place on Hillsdale’s all-time passing yards list with 4,804 for his career…His 31 career touchdown passes are two behind Pat Riepma for sixth place on the team’s all-time touchdown pass list…Junior Aaron Waldie caught six passes for 112 yards and a touchdown… For the season, Waldie has 27 receptions for 577 yards and nine TDs… His 54 points scored are already more than any Hillsdale player scored in all of 2006…Sophomore running back Vinnie Panizzi recorded his first career 100-yard game on the ground, picking up 118 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns…Junior linebacker Tom Korte had a season-high 13 solo tackles and 20 total for the game…Korte has 34 tackles in the team’s two away games this season.

  UIndy marked an even dozen straight wins over in-state rival Saint Joseph’s with a 42-16 win on Saturday … Eric Wright has gone over 100 yards in total offense and has scored in all four games this season ... Wright (131 yards), Halston Love (96 yards), Justin Blakely (34) and Lance Lasker (20) each recorded career highs in rushing in the contest … Backup placekicker Jace Morrison has converted on all 11 extra point attempts this season … Stephen Geller took a kickoff 77 yards for a score, the longest Greyhound kickoff return since the 2002 season (Marquis Tolliver- 82 yards vs. Hillsdale) … UIndy has outrushed opponents 811 to 344 so far this season … Casey Gillin is 42-of-62 for 435 yards, 5 TD and 0 INT in UIndy’s three wins this season.

  Mercyhurst is averaging 49.7 points per game over their past three contests and have scored at least 40 points in three consecutive games for the first time in program history…Richard Stokes is the only running back to rush for 150 yards or more in back-to-back games and he has now done it in three straight. He has 548 yards rushing over the past three weeks…Mitch Phillis threw four touchdown passes for the second consecutive game and added a career-high 313 yards passing, the first 300-yard passing game by a Laker quarterback since 2004…Zac Wild was unblockable on the defensive side of the ball. He had ten tackles, of which six were for loss, and three quarterback sacks…Mercyhurst is now 3-1 on the road and has clinched a .500 regular season in road games for the first time since the 2000 team went 3-3 away from Tullio Field…Mercyhurst had 313 yards passing and 207 yards rushing, the second time in the past three weeks that the Lakers had 200+ yards in each facet of the offense.

  Michigan Tech had its nine-game GLIAC winning streak snapped by #1 Grand Valley State last Saturday (Sept. 22). The Huskies are still 24-9 in GLIAC play since the start of the 2004 campaign … Marvin Atkins (Chicago, Ill./Walther Lutheran) racked up a career-high 171 yards rushing vs. Grand Valley. The junior scored on the first play from scrimmage with a 69-yard run. The play was Tech’s longest of the season and the longest run by the Huskies since Lee Marana went 80 yards on a rush at Mercyhurst on Sept. 10, 2005 … Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) registered 178 yards of total offense vs. Grand Valley to run his season total to 1,430 yards. Short averages 286 yards of total offense per game. At that rate, the sophomore would break the season school record for total offense of 2,703 (currently held by Dave Walter) … Kirk Williams (DeWitt, Mich.) tallied three receptions vs. GVSU to run his career total to 115. The senior needs just two more to move into fourth all-time at Michigan Tech and 41 more to break the school record.

  NMU has had more total offense in two of its three games, but have yet to pick up a win…The Wildcats outgained Saginaw Valley in total offense 462-424…NMU takes to the road for the second time this season to face Ferris State on Saturday…Buddy Rivera is closing in on the NMU career mark for total offense as he currently has 6,270 yards (NMU records is 6,807)…Rivera, currently has 42 passing touchdowns, needs four passing TDs to set a new NMU career record for touchdowns thrown, the current mark is 45…The NMU defense picked off its first pass of the season against the Cardinals, the Wildcats had two interceptions against SV as Travis Holmes and Jon Hoggard each had a pick…Anthony Leandri is 3-4 in field goals and 9-9 in extra points since taking over the kicking duties…NMU was 6-6 in the red zone against SV and for the year the ‘Cats are 13-13 with nine touchdowns.

  Northwood fell to 2-2 on the season after a 54-24 loss at Ashland Saturday afternoon … junior Torris Childs (N. Chicago, Ill.) finished with more than 100 yards rushing for the third straight game, ending the day with 106 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries … sophomore Dmitri Banks (Detroit, Mich./Murray Wright) scored his first career touchdown on a 12-yard pass from senior quarterback Eric Chrisinske (Allendale, Mich.) … NU did take an early 7-0 lead on a 50-yard run by senior wingback Antoine Ivy (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) … the T’Wolves finished with 260 yards rushing and 375 yards of total offense in the loss.

Cardinals

  Junior running back Brandon Emeott (Caro, Mich.) carried the ball 18 times for 111 yards and three touchdowns at Northern Michigan…It was his second career 100-yard game on the ground and the first time a SVSU running back ran for three scores since Damion Bridges on October 25, 2003 against Ferris State…Sophomore outside linebacker John Jacobs (Midland, Mich./Dow) recorded a career-high 14 tackles including seven solos at Northern Michigan…He also registered five tackles for loss and three sacks of Buddy Rivera for a loss of eight yards… Senior Joe Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) hauled in a career-high nine receptions for 76 yards and a score against the Wildcats…Randy Awrey improved to 8-1 at SVSU against his alma mater…Chris Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) threw for three TDs and 248 yards and now needs just 17 completions to tie the school record for a career.

  Wayne State has started the year 1-3, after beginning 2006 with a 3-1... Each game this year has been the opposite result against the same opponent as a year ago... Freshman Stan Thornton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow) had 157 kickoff return yards versus Findlay, the fourth highest single-game total in school history, which included a 78-yard touchdown return to start the second half. For the second week in a row, WSU set a team mark for kickoff return yards in a game (258). The 43.0 yards per return (on six returns) is also the highest for one game in WSU history... Wayne State has played back-to-back overtime games for the first time in school history and only the second time WSU has played multiple overtime games in a season (1998)... Senior linebacker Alan Guy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and sophomore safety Brandon Cooper (Detroit, Mich./St. Martin de Porres) each had 19 tackles, to tie for the ninth-highest single-game mark in school history... WSU had two kickoff returns for touchdowns against the Oilers, marking the first time in school history WSU returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game.
