Ashland saw a three-game winning streak against Hillsdale come to an end last Saturday…sophomore defensive back Calvin Black (Huron, OH) posted a career-high 14 tackles (10 solo) and 2 tackles for loss…senior safety Justin Hood (Youngstown, OH) also reached a career high in tackles Saturday. He had 11 stops (6 solo) at Hillsdale…senior wide receiver David Ziegelhofer (Lexington, OH) caught 5 passes for 109 yards. The 109 yards receiving is a career-high for Ziegelhofer. His day included a 74-yard reception, the longest of his career. The senior has caught at least one pass in 23 consecutive games. Ziegelhofer has 100 career receptions and is tied for fifth place with George Moore on Ashland’s career receptions list…the 49 points the Eagles permitted at Hillsdale is the most they’ve allowed since Michigan Tech scored 51 points in 2004…Ashland is -4 in takeaways-giveaways. Under head coach Lee Owens, the Eagles have annually been one of the GLIAC’s best teams in that department. A year ago, AU was fourth in the conference in turnover margin.

FSU jumped out to a 13-7 lead after three quarters, but dropped a 24-13 GLIAC road decision to Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Sept. 15) in SVSU’s Wickes Memorial Stadium at University Center, Mich... The contest represented the Bulldogs’ initial road outing of the year... Senior slot receiver Robert Miller (Carson, Calif.) led the Bulldogs in their loss at SVSU. The 5-8 Miller compiled 214 all-purpose yards. He had a game-high 100 yards rushing on eight carries (12.5 avg.) and added six catches for 35 yards, which led all Bulldog receivers. Miller also returned three kicks for 74 yards (28 avg.) and had a single punt return for five yards in the contest.Junior defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville) had a solid all-around performance with nine tackles, including five solo stops in the loss. He also added a forced fumble, recovered a fumble and totaled two quarterback hurries. Visser had 1.5 tackles for loss, which resulted in two yards lost.

The Oilers fell 38-15 to top ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday…The Oilers scored on their first possession of the game, a 21 yard field goal by freshman Cameron Stevens…Findlay has now scored on their opening possession in every game this season…Sophomore quarterback Jonathan Bell had a career-high 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns…He broke a 45 yard run for a score in the fourth quarter, the longest run of his career…Senior running back Joel McDaniel had 54 yards rushing on the Oilers opening drive but only ended up with 59 yards for the day…Senior defensive back Caleb Meyer had a career-high 14 tackles… Sophomore linebacker Jesse Kontras had a career-high 11 tackles.

Gannon dropped to 0-3 for the second consecutive season after a 35-0 loss to Indianapolis … it marked the first time Gannon had been shut out since September 10 at Ashland and only the second time in the last seven seasons … redshirt junior Matt Ward (Brockport, Pa./Brockport) made a career-high 10 tackles, surpassing his previous career-high by four … true freshman Sean Wallace ((Riviera Beach, Fla./William T. Dwyer) recorded eight tackles after making only three in the first two games … fellow true freshmen Kevin Minor (South Euclid, Ohio/Shaw) and Matthew Neal-Mink (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) also posted season-highs in tackles with seven each … opponents have scored 15 times during 16 trips inside Gannon’s red zone during the first three games, including 14 touchdowns … the Golden Knights have scored once in four times inside the red zone.

The fourth straight Homecoming victory was one for the ages for the Charger football team…Hillsdale defeated Ashland 49-28, improving to 3-0 for the first time since 1992…The game marked the first time in Hillsdale’s 116-year football history it scored 40 or more points in three consecutive games…Senior quarterback Mark Nicolet set a school record with 426 passing yards in the victory…He moved into eighth place on Hillsdale’s all-time touchdown pass list and fifth place into Hillsdale’s all-time passing yards list in the win…Nicolet has 11 touchdowns and one interception on the season…Junior wide receiver Aaron Waldie tied a Hillsdale record with 11 catches…His 211 receiving yards were 11 shy of the school record, set by Ed House in 2001…Waldie has 22 catches for 465 yards and eight touchdowns in just three games this season…Waldie has caught five touchdown passes of 40 or more yards this season…Seven different players caught passes in Hillsdale’s win over the Eagles…Hillsdale hadn’t beaten Ashland since 2003…The two teams combined for 1,038 yards of offense, the second straight week Hillsdale has played in a game where the two teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of offense…Hillsdale has scored 20 or more points in a quarter three times this season.

Mercyhurst won a wild triple overtime affair with Wayne State, defeating the Warriors 58-50…Mercyhurst improved to 3-1 for the first time since 1999 and is also 2-1 in the GLIAC for the first time since the same season…Mitch Phillis was 7-of-8 passing in the three overtimes for 55 yards and three touchdown passes. He finished 26-of-45 for 283 yards and four scoring strikes…Theo Hall had two interceptions, blocked a punt, and made eight tackles…Charlie Gleisner led Mercyhurst with 13 tackles… Mercyhurst tight ends Josh Szeluga and Brandon Hill combined for 16 catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns…The 108 combined points is the most in a game Mercyhurst has been involved in since losing to Buffalo State 59-52 in five overtimes in 1996…The 58 points scored is the most for a Mercyhurst team since defeating Buffalo State 63-14 in 1988…While Richard Stokes set a school record with 37 carries a week ago, he had 35 against Wayne State, the second-highest total in school history…Stokes finished with 154 yards and is the first back in program history to rush for 150+ yards in back-to-back games.

Tyler Cattelino (Houghton, Mich.) picked a good time to make his first career field goal. The true freshman knocked through a 48-yarder as time expired to lift the Huskies to a 43-41 victory at #13 Northwood. The 48-yard field goal was just three yards short of the school-record-long field goal … Michigan Tech ran its GLIAC winning streak to nine straight games with last Saturday’s (Sept. 15) win at Northwood. The Huskies have now avenged three of their four losses from last season. Tech’s last loss in league play was at eventual national champion Grand Valley State back on Sept. 21, 2006. The Huskies will host the GVSU Lakers Saturday (Sept. 22) at Sherman Field … Quarterback Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in Tech’s 43-41 win at #13 Northwood. The 6-0 sophomore also totaled 262 yards of total offense in the game. For the season, Short has accounted for 15 of the team’s 21 touchdowns and is averaging 313 yards of total offense per game … Freshman Phil Milbrath (Norway, Mich.) gained 88 yards 12 carries at Northwood. He is the Huskies leading rusher on the season 303 yards and a 75.8 yards per game average.

The No. 13 Northwood University football team dropped a thriller to Michigan Tech 44-42 in Midland ... NU rallied from a 27-7 halftime deficit to take a pair of leads in the fourth quarter, but a field goal as time expired gave the Huskies the win ... the Timberwolves finished the game with 315 yards passing ... it was the first time since October 24, 1998 that Northwood finished with more than 300 yards passing ... Northwood had a season-high 546 total yards of offense in the loss ... sophomore quarterback Spencer Klukowski (Rockford, Mich.) entered the game and threw for 234 yards and four touchdowns ... his four TD passes tied a school record set by Jason Martin in the 2002 season ... three of Klukowski’s touchdowns went to freshman receiver Quillan Mathis (Detroit, Mich./Finney) ... Mathis has caught at least one touchdown pass in all three NU games and currently has five receiving touchdowns on the season, which ranks him second in the GLIAC ... Torris Childs (N. Chicago, Ill.) had 120 yards, going over 100 yards for the second straight game ... defensively, Kyle Clement (Hudsonville, Mich.) led the Timberwolves with 10 tackles.

Saginaw Valley State evened the all-time series at 16-16-1 against Ferris State with a 24-13 win on Saturday…Junior Brandon Emeott (Caro, Mich.) has went over 100 all-purpose yards in all three games this season including 123 yards versus FSU (67 rush, 4 receive, 52 kick return)…Emeott also had his first rushing TD of the season in the fourth quarter and later carried from 14 yards into the end zone…Senior quarterback Chris Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) found 10 different receivers for 320 yards versus the Bulldogs…He has completed 67.5 percent of his passes this year for 982 yards and 10 TD’s with zero picks…SVSU started the year going 10-of-10 in the red zone with 10 TD’s before fumbling into the end zone against Ferris State in the second quarter…SVSU has outscored their opponent, 37-7, in the fourth quarter this year.

Saturday’s contest was the second longest in WSU history only surpassed by the four overtime game at St. Joseph’s on Nov. 14, 1998 … the 108 points combined by both teams is a WSU record breaking the 95 scored between WSU and Northern Michigan in an overtime game on Oct. 26, 2002 (a 49-46 Wildcat victory) … Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) had his fifth 200+-yard rushing game in only his 14th career contest … he scored a school record five touchdowns and became the first player in school history to score 30 points in a game since Russ Lightbody (4 touchdowns, 6 extra points) on Oct. 30, 1920, vs. Ferris State in a 48-0 Detroit Junior College win … Bell also moved into third place on the all-time rushing yards chart at 2,534 … he trails second place Steve Lee (1988-91) by 18 yards … Bell passed Elbert Richmond (1950-52) for fourth place on the career touchdown list … the 50 points is the most by WSU since a 57-20 Tartar triumph over Michigan Tech on Oct. 6, 1984 … the Warriors had a school record 225 kickoff return yards eclipsing the 221 set at Bloomsburg on Aug. 31, 1996 … David Chudzinski (Belleville, Mich.) moved into a second-place tie for career extra points made (60) with Bill Kelley (1973-76).
