  The Eagles were ranked 25th in last week’s d2football.com national poll…last week’s game against Grand Valley was cancelled due to lightning. The game was halted with 7:22 to play in the first half…AU will visit Hillsdale this week. The winner of the annual AU-HC game receives the Traveling Trophy. The Eagles have won the last three meetings with the Chargers.

  Ferris State suffered a 42-23 loss to Mercyhurst in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener Saturday (Sept. 8) evening at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich... Senior slot receiver Robert Miller (Carson, Calif.) caught nine passes for 147 yards in the game. The 5-8 Miller, who also ran once for eight yards, tallied 297 all-purpose yards in the contest as he also returned six kicks for 137 yards and two punts for five yards... Junior middle linebacker Kevin Noe (Orleans/Belding) tallied a team-best and personal career-high 10 tackles in the game for FSU. Six of his stops were solo efforts in the game-high performance... Junior kicker/punter Jim Yates (Goshen, Ind.) converted three made field goals in the contest. His 27-yard field goal only three minutes into the game represented the first made field goal of his career... Mercyhurst’s victory snapped a five-game Bulldog series’ winning streak.

  The Oilers had their chances against #13 Northwood but in the end lost 21-17…Sophomore wide receiver Corey Clarke had a 51 yard TD reception…Senior fullback Kevin McCann had a career-high 82 yards receiving… Sophomore quarterback Anthony Lanzara had a career-high 174 yards passing…The Oilers scored on their opening drive for the second consecutive game… Sophomore cornerback Brian Williams had a career-high eight tackles…He also broke up two passes and intercepted another.

  Gannon dropped to 0-2 for the second consecutive season after a 49-7 loss to Saginaw Valley State … Anthony Weaver (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led all tacklers on both sides with a career-high 13 tackles … Weaver was a running back last year, before becoming Gannon’s starting safety this season … Evan Euler (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) averaged 39.4 yards on eight punts, placing three inside the 20-yard line … Euler has placed five punts inside the 20-yard line in the first two games … true freshman Bob Bartley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) made his first career start at quarterback, going 11-of-22 for 135 yards and one touchdown … Bartley hit redshirt freshman Levar Goff (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) for a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, providing both players with their first career touchdown … Parris Williams (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) posted a career-high 11 tackles against Hillsdale … opponents have scored all 11 times inside Gannon’s red zone in the first two games, including 10 touchdowns … the Golden Knights have scored once in four times inside the red zone.

  #1 Grand Valley State (1-0) and #25 Ashland's GLIAC contest Saturday (Sept. 8) was called due to weather. Grand Valley State led 14-6 with 7:22 left in the second quarter when lightning struck. The contest was halted at 8:05 and when lightning continued to be visible it was called a no contest at 9:45. Grand Valley State will host Findlay at Lubbers Stadium next Saturday (Sept. 15) at 7 p.m.

  For the first time since 1999, the Hillsdale College football team is off to a 2-0 start after its thrilling 42-41 road win over Northern Michigan University…The win is the first on the road for the Chargers since Sept. 2, 2006, when it defeated Gannon 35-7…Senior QB Mark Nicolet passed for a career-high 376 yards in the game, to go along with three touchdowns…Through two games, Nicolet has completed 70 percent of his passes for 603 yards, eight touchdowns and just one interception…Nicolet’s 25 career touchdown passes now tie him for eighth on the Chargers’ all-time list, with former All-American Brian Boyse…Nicolet now has 4,046 career passing yards, making him just the seventh Hillsdale quarterback to pass for more than 4,000 yards for a career…He is 199 yards shy of passing Pat Ripema for fifth place on Hillsdale’s all-time passing yards list…Sophomore Vinnie Panizzi rushed for a career-high three touchdowns in the win…This game marked the first time Hillsdale has scored at least 40 points in back-to-back games since 2001…The 101 combined points in the first two games of the season are the most for the Chargers in two games since 1969, when it scored 105 against Findlay and Winona State, respectively…Hillsdale defeated Northern Michigan for the first time since 2003…Wide receiver Aaron Waldie has caught 10 passes for 254 yards and five touchdowns through two games…In the entire 2006 season, Waldie had 21 catches for 261 yards and four touchdowns...the Chargers host Ashland University for its Homecoming game at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 15.

  Casey Gillin’s four touchdowns tied a career best (set last season vs. MTU) ... Gillin’s 75-yard pass to Eric Wright marked the longest pass of his collegiate career ... Kyle Mossbrucker was short on a 45-yard field goal attempt in the first half to snap his string of consecutive makes at seven ... A week after his first 100-yard rushing game, Wright posted his first-ever 100-yard receiving game (101 yards on five catches) … David Link amassed a career-high 119 yards rushing, his first 100+ rushing game.

  Mercyhurst got its first GLIAC win of the season by defeating Ferris State 42-23 Saturday…The Lakers improved to 2-1 on the road a year after going winless…The victory snapped a 20-game losing streak in the state of Michigan dating back to the 2000 season…The 42 points was the most the team ever scored in a game played in Michigan…Junior running back Richard Stokes rushed for a career-high 244 yards, breaking the school record with 37 carries. The 244 yards were the second most in school history and only the third time a running back went over the 200-yard mark…Stokes also had 26 yards receiving and 91 yards on three kick returns for 361 all-purpose yards…Senior quarterback Mitch Phillis was 20-of-32 passing for 248 yards and two touchdowns. He has now thrown at least one touchdown pass in seven consecutive games.

  Michigan Tech ran its GLIAC winning streak to eight games last Saturday (Sept. 8) with a 44-30 win over Indianapolis. The Huskies last loss in conference play was at eventual national champion Grand Valley State back on Sept. 21, 2006 … Michigan Tech has won eight of its last nine games overall, with its only loss coming at Winona State in overtime, 47-44, on Aug. 25 … Quarterback Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) rushed for four touchdowns and passed for another vs. Indianapolis. The sophomore has accounted for 11 of the team’s 15 touchdowns this season and is averaging 329.7 yards of total offense per game … Junior cornerback Robert Haynes (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown vs. Indianapolis. That marked the Huskies’ first interception return for a touchdown since the opening game of 2003. Haynes, who also serves as Michigan Tech’s kick returner, ranks second the GLIAC in kick return average at 22.6 yards per return … Senior wide receiver Kirk Williams (DeWitt, Mich.) hauled in eight passes for 71 yards Saturday. He now owns 109 career receptions — good for fifth all-time at Michigan Tech … Tech’s 14-point win vs. Indianapolis was just the second game in the 12-game series history decided by more than a score. The Huskies now lead the series with the Greyhounds, 7-5.

  Mark Bossuah set new NMU and Superior Dome records with his 317 yards of rushing against Hillsdale on Saturday. He also had a career-high 35 carries… The old NMU record was by Nelson Edmonds in 1991 against Wayne State as he rushed for 291 yards on 62 carries. The old Dome record was 260 yards set by Edmonds against UIndy during the 1991 season... NMU and Hillsdale combined for over 1,100 yards of total offense on Saturday. NMU had 604 yards of total offense (369 rushing and 235 passing)…The 604 yards of total offense is the most by the ‘Cats since the 568 yards of total offense against Gannon in 2005…The rushing yardage is the most since the 216 yards against Mercyhurst in 2005…Buddy Rivera is 38 yards (5,962) away from 6,000 yards of total offense for his career. Rivera had four TD passes against Hillsdale and now has 40 for his career…Anthony Leadndri connected on all five of his extra points and was two-of-three in field goals on Saturday…Zach Nichols has four of the six touchdown catches on the season as he had two against the Chargers. Nichols had 15 receptions and two touchdowns in 2006 and currently has 10 receptions and four TDs…NMU had the ball for a little over five more minutes than Hillsdale and in the fourth quarter the ‘Cats had the ball for almost 11 minutes….Nathan Yelk had a team-high 11 total tackles against Hillsdale (four solo and seven assisted) and now has a tea.

  The No. 13 Northwood University football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a hard-fought 21-17 victory over Findlay ... the game was close throughout - neither team led by more than seven points at any point ... the final stats proved to be close as well - the Oilers finished with a 336-323 advantage in total yards, while Northwood held a 19-16 edge in first downs ... NU earned the victory despite committing three turnovers to zero for Findlay ... Torris Childs (N. Chicago, Ill.) made his season debut and rushed for a game-high 127 yards rushing and a touchdown ... freshman receiver Quallan Mathis (Detroit, Mich./Finney) caught a touchdown pass from Eric Chrisinske (Allendale, Mich.) for the second straight game ... Northwood’s defensive effort was led by three players - Cortez McCoy (Detroit, Mich/Cass Tech), Matt Worton (Bloomfield, Mich./Hills Lasher) and Leroy Goulbourne (Hollywood, Fla.) each finished with 10 tackles ... Northwood head coach Pat Riepma now needs one victory to tie former NU head coach Jack Finn as the winningest coach in school history ... Riepma is now 86-64-2 as a coach for the Timberwolves, which includes a record of 29-8 dating back to the 2004 season.

  Senior quarterback Chris Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) is off to a hot start this season having completed 70.3 percent of his passes for 662 yards, nine touchdowns and zero interceptions…He tossed five touchdowns at Gannon which tied his own school record set last year at Grand Valley State…The Cardinals had six passing touchdowns as a team which was one shy of the school record set in 2002 against Findlay…Senior Ric Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) has been Dougherty’s favorite target again this season hauling in a team-high 13 balls for 231 yards and four scores…He caught six passes for 140 yards and two scores at Gannon giving him nine 100-yard games in his career…SVSU rolled up a total of 641 offensive yards against the Golden Knights which was 69 yards short of the school record…The Cardinals also rushed for 284 yards after a 41-yard performance against Ashland in week one…Junior Brandon Emeott (Caro, Mich.) ran for 112 yards on 14 carries and finished with 152 all-purpose yards…SVSU punted on their first possession of the second half and then proceeded to score four straight touchdowns before kneeling on the ball in the final seconds…Senior Josh Miller (Waterford, Mich./Mott) led SVSU with eight tackles and two sacks for a loss of 17 yards… Redshirt freshman L.J. Robertson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) scored his first rushing touchdown with a two-yard plunge with 3:42 left in the fourth quarter.

  The 42 points scored by WSU on Saturday was the most since a 45-42 triumph at Northern Michigan on Oct. 25, 2003... The win was the first non-conference road win by Wayne State since a 27-12 victory at American International on Oct. 16, 1993... The Warrior defense recorded 10 sacks with nine different individuals contributing... WSU had three different players rush for touchdowns at St. Joseph’s (Daryl Graham, Joique Bell and Pohl), two different players throw scoring passes (Pohl and Zack George) and three different players record touchdown receptions (Bell, Kenny Schmidt and Mosley)... After recording six plays (rushing, receiving, returns) of 20 yards or more in the opener, WSU had nine 20+-yard plays at SJC... Place-kicker David Chudzinski (Belleville, Mich.) made all six of his extra-point attempts extending his consecutive PAT streak to 45. The last WSU kicker to go 6-for-6 in game on PATs was Greg Gundersen at NMU on Oct. 25, 2003... Dante Dunn (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) had two kickoff returns for 64 yards to move into place on the WSU all-time kickoff return yards chart with 638 yards... Bell moved into ninth place on the WSU career rushing attempts list surpassing Randy Alexander (1977-80). He needs 98 rushing yards to move past Craig Duppong (2002-03) into fifth place on the WSU rushing yards list. Bell’s 156 points currently ranks seventh and he trails Matt Fishburn (1994-97), WSU’s all-time scoring leader for kickers, by two points.
