Ashland’s win against Saginaw Valley marked the first time the Eagles had beaten SVSU since 1997. This was Ashland’s first win at Saginaw Valley since 1990. AU had lost five consecutive meetings to the Cardinals prior to Saturday’s victory…the win against Saginaw Valley was also Ashland’s first over a ranked opponent since a 39-14 victory over Michigan Tech in 1999 (the Cards entered Saturday’s game ranked 25th)…the Eagles outgained the Cardinals on the ground, 229-41. That’s the fewest yards AU has allowed on the ground since limiting Mercyhurst to 9 yards on Sept. 30, 2006….under head coach Lee Owens, the Eagles are 19-3 when outrushing the opposition… senior wide receiver David Ziegelhofer (Lexington, OH) caught 5 passes for 58 yards last Saturday and has caught at least one pass in 22 consecutive games…the Eagles introduced two new running backs Saturday – true freshman Javan Javey (Euclid, OH) and sophomore Dawon Harvey (Columbus, OH/Central State). Javey had 99 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown and Harvey rushed for 79 yards on 10 attempts.

Ferris State opened the 2007 campaign with a 42-19 non-league victory over Kentucky State before a crowd of 2,359 Saturday (Sept. 1) evening at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich... Senior quarterback C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa) helped account for five of the Bulldogs’ six touchdowns in the win. The signal caller completed seven-of-eight passes for a personal career-high 294 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a team-best 118 rushing yards on 17 carries along with three TD’s running the ball. Van Wieren’s performance included a 79-yard scoring toss to senior receiver Mike Guevara. He ran for two scores and threw for two more as the Bulldogs scored four consecutive touchdowns in the second and third quarters to take the lead for good... Junior defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville), a preseason All-America honoree, led the Bulldog defense with 11 tackles, including eight solo stops... The Bulldogs have now won 11 of their last 19 season openers to date following Saturday’s victory. This year marks the second consecutive season the Bulldogs have opened the year with a win over KSU after a 31-13 road victory a year ago in Frankfort, Ky... Junior defensive back Terrell Heggins (Lansing/Everett), a transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, had an interception in his first game with the Bulldogs... Senior WR Mike Guevara (Manteca, Calif.) had three catches for 160 yards in the game, including a 79-yard TD reception.

The Oilers won their sixth straight opening game to a season with a 20-0 win over Charleston at Donnell Stadium...The shutout win came in head coach Jon Wauford's first ever collegiate contest at the helm of a football program...The shutout also marked the first time the Oilers have won in that fashion in an opening game since 1996...The Oilers forced five turnovers in the game...The total was more than any other game last season...Senior running back Joel McDaniel topped the 100 yard mark for the third time in his career...Sophomore Anthony Fields made two interceptions in his first career start...Findlay's eight sacks in the game were only six short of equaling their entire total from last year..

Gannon opened the Jim Kiernan era last Saturday with a lopsided loss at Hillsdale … the Golden Knights have dropped five consecutive games to Hillsdale and have been outscored 216-66 in those games … junior transfer Jarrett Beavers (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Lathrup) rushed for 117 yards on 14 carries in the Gannon debut, becoming the first running back to rush for 100 yards since Ron Bailey posted 144 yards against Findlay on October 22, 2005 … Alton Kenner (Buffalo, N.Y./Turner-Carroll) was the only player for either team to reach double digits in tackles with 11 … Kenner tied a career-high in solo tackles (4) and fell two shy of his career-high in total tackles … true freshman Jeremy Ditzler (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) nailed a 40-yard field goal in his first collegiate attempt 4:45 into the game, giving the Golden Knights a 3-0 lead.

Grand Valley State improved to 21-16 in season-opening games...The Lakers are 11-6 when opening the season at home, 10-9 when opening the season on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site... Home Openers: Grand Valley State is 23-12 in home openers, including a 4-0 mark under Chuck Martin. GVSU did not play a home game in either of their first two seasons... GVSU has the second best winning percentage of football playing schools in the State of Michigan, behind Michigan’s 860-281-36 (.745) mark. GVSU is 279-114-3 (.712).

Hillsdale College’s season-opening 59-3 win over Gannon University Saturday was one for the record books…The Chargers’ 56-point margin of victory was its largest since 1969, and its 59 points were the most scored in a game since 1968…Mark Petro’s eight extra points were one off the school record of nine … Mark Nicolet’s 12-for-14 (85.7 percent) completion percentage was just shy of Pat Riepma’s school record of 12-for-12…Aaron Waldie caught four passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns, on his 21st birthday Saturday…A pair of Hillsdale High School standouts also made their marks in the win…Drew Berube led the team with seven total tackles, while Mike Blanchard scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 25-yard pass from Troy Weatherhead in the third quarter…The throw was also Weatherhead’s first collegiate score … Bill Kanitz scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the first quarter… Hillsdale has averaged 43.8 points per game in its last four meetings against Gannon, all victories…The game was Gannon’s first visit to Hillsdale since 2004…Nicolet’s five touchdown passes were a career-high.

Several Greyhounds recorded career highs in the win over NMU … Eric Wright ran for 115 yards on 21 carries, both career marks … Nick Johnson caught seven balls for 80 yards, also both personal bests … Tyran Fakes caught his first touchdown, part of a career-best four receptions … Kyle Mossbrucker connected on his only field goal attempt (27) to extend his streak of consecutive makes to seven, dating back to last season.

Mercyhurst fell to 1-1 on the season with a 28-10 loss to No. 15 Northwood Saturday…Senior quarterback Mitch Phillis became the second leading passer in school history by throwing for 230 yards. He needed 96 to move past Matt Golga (3,964 yards from 1993-96) on the leaderboard…Frank Ziegler and Aaron Haynes had career days receiving. Ziegler had five catches for 66 yards and Haynes had four for 69, all career highs…Kicker Chris Ryan made the first field goal of his career, knocking down a 26-yarder in the third quarter…With three catches for 15 yards, running back Richard Stokes became just the third player in school history to have 1,000 career yards rushing and 400 receiving. He joins Craig Woodard (1992-95) and Justin Gibson (1996-00) in that club…True freshman Fred Hale showed signs of becoming an impact player along the defensive line, tallying five tackles, including three for loss…Cornerback Theo Hall blocked a field goal attempt and had an interception…Mercyhurst will play its third consecutive road game to start the season when the Lakers travel to Ferris State for a 7 p.m. start time Saturday.

Michigan Tech ran its GLIAC winning streak to seven games with a 21-14 win at Wayne State last Saturday (Sept. 1) … True freshman Phil Milbrath (Norway, Mich.) gained 118 yards on 28 carries in his first collegiate start last Saturday. The 5-9, 190-pound tailback scored two touchdowns — one in the second quarter and another in the third — and played every offensive down for the Huskies … Senior receiver Kirk Williams (DeWitt, Mich.) tallied six receptions vs. Wayne State to become just the seventh player in Michigan Tech history with 100 career catches. Williams now has 101 receptions — good for sixth all-time … Michigan Tech has an all-time record of 310-310-17. The Huskies are 22-10 since the start of the 2004 campaign … Quarterback Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) tallied 223 yards of total offense at Wayne State. He is averaging 363.5 yards of total offense per game.

Bernie Anderson is now 1-1 in opening games of the season at NMU, overall he is 15-6-0…The Wildcats took the opening kickoff of the game, went 12 plays to score…The Wildcats had the ball for almost seven minutes of the fourth quarter and scored 12 points…NMU has not won back-to-back opening games of the season since opening the 1997 and 1998 seasons with wins…Buddy Rivera threw two touchdown passes and now has 36 for his career as the NMU career record is 45…Rivera has now thrown for over 5,000 yards in his NMU career…Zach Nichols was the recipient of both of Rivera’s TD passes for nine and 23 yards…Nichols ended the game with four receptions for 45 yards…Fred Wells led all receivers with 11 receptions (a career high) for 124 yards…Two ‘Cats were in double-figures in the tackling area as Nicholas Bloch had a team-high 12 total tackles (four solo and eight assisted) and Nathan Yelk had 11 (four solo and seven assisted)…NMU was 4-of-4 in the red zone against UIndy.

The No. 15 Northwood University football team opened its 46th season of competition with a 28-10 victory over Mercyhurst ... Northwood used a dominating second half performance to earn the victory ... after the Lakers led 7-0 after the first quarter and the game was tied at halftime, Northwood rushed for 278 yards in the final two quarters and out-scored Mercyhurst 21-3 ... the Timberwolves continued to show balance in their rushing attack, finishing the game with three players that rushed for more than 80 yards ... senior quarterback Eric Chrisinske (Allendale, Mich.) finished with 134 yards rushing and a passing touchdown in his first career start ... senior running back Casey Steffen (Flat Rock, Mich.) filled in at fullback and finished the game with 91 yards and three touchdowns against the Lakers ... senior Antoine Ivy (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) added 80 yards on just seven carries ... Northwood had 10 rushes that went for at least 10 yards in the second half of the game, including a pair that went for over 50 yards ... the defensive effort was led by Junior Linebacker Tommy Paulsen (Lake Orion, Mich.) ... he led Northwood with 12 tackles (10 solos) and also forced and recovered a fumble ... Leroy Goulbourne (Hollywood, Fla./ McArthur) added eight tackles, including two for loss ... the Timberwolves will travel to Findlay Saturday for a contest with the Oilers..

The Cardinals dropped a 32-27 decision to Ashland on Saturday which was their first season opening loss since a 2004 home loss to Northwood (24-21)…It was the first loss in six games against Ashland with head coach Randy Awrey on the sidelines…The 32 points allowed marks the third time in the last 10 home games that the opponent has scored 30 or more points…Senior inside linebacker Derek Volmering (Harbor Beach, Mich.) notched a career-high 19 tackles and also had 14 solo stops…Senior quarterback Chris Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) threw for 340 yards and four scores…Senior wide receiver Ric Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) hauled in seven passes for 91 yards and two scores.

Just before halftime junior Daryl Graham (Detroit, Mich./St. Martin de Porres/Michigan Tech) rushed 38 yards for his first touchdown as a Warrior and his 18th career rushing touchdown. Sophomore Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) had a two-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter then recovered an onside kick. Bell moved past A.J. Vaughn (1965-67) into 10th place on WSU’s all-time carries list at 370. He is sixth in rushing yards at 2,227, 12 games into his collegiate career. Bell also went from 11th to eighth on Saturday in all-time all-purpose yards with the fourth highest mark of his career (255). Senior place-kicker David Chudzinski (Belleville, Mich.) extended his consecutive PAT streak to 39 by making both attempts on Saturday. He also moved into a tie-for-fifth with Dick Lisabeth (1951-54) among all WSU kickers with 48 PATs. Junior safety Steve Wisniewski (Madison Hts., Mich./Lamphere) made his first collegiate start against Michigan Tech and responded with a game-high 13 tackles, equaling his career total through 20 games... Three Warriors – redshirt freshmen Ed Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and Travis Campbell (Gahanna, Ohio/Westerville North) and sophomore Bruno Shkreli (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) each had their first collegiate receptions as quarterback Trent Pohl (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) completed passes to seven different receivers... WSU’s attendance last Saturday was the highest for a home opener since 1982 when the Tartars defeated Albion 14-13 in front of 3,154.
