Last Friday night, prior to Saturday’s game at Gannon, AU announced that head coach Lee Owens had accepted a multi-year contract extension…in Saturday’s win over GU the Eagles established season highs for points (45) and total yards (496)…senior quarterback Nick Strance (Willard, OH) threw for 135 yards on Saturday and became AU’s career leader in yards passing (4,478). Strance is also the school’s career leader in pass attempts (787) and pass completions (418)…freshman Julian Johnson (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) finishes the year with a 10.7 ypr., average on 14 punt returns. That’s the best mark by an AU player since 1990 when Mike Mason averaged 12.2 ypr…against Gannon, AU forced 11 fumbles and recovered 4. The 4 recoveries is one shy of the school single-game record…junior tailback Jon Schroeder (Avon Lake, OH) rushed for four touchdowns against the Golden Knights. That’s the first time an AU player has rushed for 4 touchdowns in a game since Jason Schwalm did it last year at Mercyhurst…since Owens became AU’s head coach in 2004 the Eagles have scored 40+ points three times. Two of those games came in Erie, PA… senior linebacker Allen Lattimore (Dayton, OH/Colonel White) ends his career with 38.5 tackles for loss, the most in school history.

Bulldogs

Ferris State concluded the regular season with an 8-3-0 overall record, which represented the Bulldogs’ best since the 1996 season (10-2-0 overall). FSU compiled a 3-8-0 overall mark for the 2005 campaign... Ferris improved to 15-8-0 (.652) in regular-season finale games dating back to 1985 with Saturday’s (11/11) home triumph over Wayne State. The Bulldogs also snapped a four-game losing skid in such encounters as FSU’s last season-finale win was in 2001 (11/10) with a 16-13 double-overtime home decision against Indianapolis... FSU’s 21-17 win versus Wayne State Saturday (11/11) marked the 11th time in the last 13 meetings in which the Bulldogs have prevailed over the Warriors. Ferris has now won six of the last seven encounters between the two teams...Senior middle linebacker Mike Klobucher (Grand Haven/North Muskegon) registered his fifth double-digit game tackle performance this fall with a game-high tying 12 stops (eight solos) against Wayne State. Klobucher, who had a season-high 16 tackles versus Michigan Tech earlier this campaign (10/7), has accumulated 20 double-figure tackle outings in 42 career games. His 389 career stops (206 solos) ranks seventh among the school’s all-time leaders.

The Oilers ended their season with a 33-15 loss to Michigan Tech…The Oilers conclude the 2006 season with a 2-9 record, their most losses since the 1927 season…Freshman wide receiver Corey Clarke recorded his first career touchdown while freshman wide receiver Jonathon Bell had a career best six receptions for 84 yards…Defensively, senior defensive back Nick Notario had 17 tackles, his season best…Junior linebacker Caleb Meyer had a career-high 13 tackles in the loss…Findlay’s 117 points on the year were the least amount of points ever scored by the Oilers in an 11 game season.

Golden Knights

Gannon completed its 2006 schedule at 1-10 overall and 1-9 in the GLIAC after a 45-14 loss to Ashland last Saturday … Sam Culberth (Tampa, Fla./Chamberlain) recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game with 113 yards on eight carries … Culberth lined up as a quarterback, running back, and wide receiver throughout the game … Culberth became the fourth player in school history to record 3,000 career all-purpose yards, finishing the game and his career with 3,057 … Dan Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) fell short of his pursuit of the school’s single-season tackle record … Tomko entered the game with 108 tackles, needing 12 to tie Pat Rodkey’s school record of 120, but made only seven stops … Tomko finished with the third-highest single-season total (115) and completed her career fifth all-time at Gannon with 262 career tackles … Gannon fumbled 11 times against Ashland, losing four … the Golden Knights’ one victory in 2006 was the program’s lowest victory total since the 1999 squad went 1-9.

GVSU is making its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA DII playoffs and the 11th overall in the program’s history. GVSU is 17-2 in its last five playoff appearances with three DII National Championships. The Lakers have a 17-7 all-time mark in the DII football playoffs...GVSU improved to 81-5 in its last 86 games and 54-3 in its last 57 GLIAC games...The Laker senior class improved to 48-4 in their careers...GVSU is 46-2 when ranked number one and the Lakers have been ranked number one in 54-of-the-last-68 polls...Finnerty became the GVSU all-time leader and moved into fourth all-time in DII career total offense list with 11,970 yards...Cullen is 10th in DII history in career passing TDs with 98 and second in GVSU annals...Finnerty is 17th in DII history with 9,849 passing yards...Eric Fowler’s 16 receiving TDs is the third-best single-season total and his total of 23 the third-best career total...Fowler’s 1,090 receiving yards marks just the fourth time in Laker history that a receiver went over the 1,000-yard mark.

The Hillsdale College football team finished with a 5-6 record for the second consecutive season after Saturday’s 46-30 loss to Saginaw Valley State University…The loss was the highest scoring game of the season for the Chargers…Senior running back Phil Martin rushed for 81 yards, giving him his second straight 1,000-yard rushing season and 3,395 yards on the ground for his career…Martin finishes his Charger playing days as the school’s No. 2 all-time leading rusher…Junior quarterback Mark Nicolet narrowly missed becoming Hillsdale’s first 2,000-yard passer in three years, finishing the 2006 season with 1,949 yards through the air…Sophomore linebacker Tom Korte led Hillsdale in total tackles in all 11 games this season, and had 134 tackles for the season.

Craig Jenkins ran for nine yards on the opening play from scrimmage to make him the new UIndy season record holder for rushing yards … He finished the season with 1,136 yards, breaking the 26-year record of 1,106 held by Mike Wishnevski … The Greyhounds were shutout for the first time since 1995, a 27-0 loss to St. Francis (120 games) … Casey Gillin had his string of consecutive games with a touchdown pass snapped at 10 … He had thrown for a score in every game this season … Gillin’s season total of 2,287 passing yards ranked fifth all-time at Indianapolis … Kevin Shaw amassed 16 total tackles to lead the UIndy defense, the most by a Greyhound this season … Shaw led the Hounds in total stops for the season (87).

Huskies

Senior Lee Marana (Ishpeming, Mich./Westwood) tallied 175 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries at Findlay last Saturday (Nov. 11). He ran his season rushing total to 1,274 yards and career total to 4,784 yards, just four yards short of tying the school record held by Jim VanWagner. Marana moved into second place during the game, passing Jeremy Monroe (4,695). The 5-11, 213-pound running back finished his standout career with 57 touchdowns, 24 100-yard games, and three 1,100+ yard seasons . . . Michigan Tech won its last six games of the season to finish above .500 for the third straight year. The Huskies, with a 9-2 record in 2004 and 6-3 mark in 2005, are 22-9 (.710) since the final game of 2003 . . . Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) finished 2006 with a 6-0 record as a starter. The freshman quarterback completed 61-of-93 passes for 850 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions since taking over the starting role. Short led the team in total offense for the season with an average of 151.2 yards per game . . . Tech held Findlay to 66 yards rushing last Saturday marking the sixth consecutive opponent limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing. The Huskies finished first in the league in rushing defense at 96.3 yards per game. MTU was also third in the league in scoring defense (19.2 points per game) and total defense (274.0 yards per game).

The first year of the Bernie Anderson Era at NMU is history, the three wins is an improvement over back-to-back two wins seasons… Buddy Rivera had his sixth game on Saturday against Grand Valley where he threw for over 200 yards, he has at least one touchdown pass in every game this season but one…Rivera will enter the 2007 season with 5,399 yards of total offense, the NMU career record is 6,807 yards…Rivera currently has 34 career touchdown passes as the NMU record is 45…Rivera ended the 2006 campaign with 20 touchdown passes and just missed the NMU record (22)…Zach Nichols and Greg Raspberry both had career days against the Lakers…Nichols had eight receptions for 63 yards while Raspberry hauled in six passes for 192 yards…NMU’s 340 yards of passing against GVSU was a season high, the ‘Cats had back-to-back games of over 300 yards passing (Gannon and GVSU).

Northwood earned its third straight bid to the NCAA Playoffs after improving to 8-2 on the season with a 23-0 victory over Indianapolis … the fourth-seeded Timberwolves now advance will now face the No. 5 seed in South Dakota … the winner of that game will face the No. 1 seed, Grand Valley … NU’s win against Indianapolis gave the Timberwolves a second place finish in the GLIAC this season … over the past three years, Northwood has finished first, third and second in the league … it was the first time Northwood had shutout an opponent since November 18, 2000, when NU posted a 28-0 victory over IUP in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs … Kyle Clement (Hudsonville, Mich.) was the star of the day for the Timberwolves … he finished with 4.5 tackles for loss (-26 yards), 2.5 sacks (-19 yards), a safety and a pass defended ... his 4.5 tackles for loss are the most for a Northwood player this season and the second most for any player in the GLIAC in 2006 … his safety in the fourth quarter capped the scoring and ensured the shutout … Kyle Kolbe (Clare, Mich.) led the offensive effort with 93 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns … Torris Childs (N. Chicago, Ill.) added 73 yards and a touchdown … Kolbe (952 yards) and Childs (908 yards) each have a chance to rush for over 1,000 yards this season.

The Cardinals won their 10th straight regular season finale against Hillsdale and finish the season with a 6-4 record...The tandem of juniors Chris Dougherty (Grinnell, Iowa) and Ric Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) had another big day on Saturday as Dougherty completed 25-of-28 for 275 yards and three scores and Cottengim caught 10 passes for 133 yards and two scores...Dougherty set a single season record with a 70.5 completion percentage and threw for 1,474 yards and 13 TD’s in seven games...Cottengim moved into second for a season with 13 receiving TD’s this season...Junior cornerback Mark Miller (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) returned an interception 80 yards for his first career TD...Junior Derek Volmering (Harbor Beach, Mich.) recorded a season-high 14 tackles and led the squad with 89 tackles.

Freshman running back Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) became just the 14th NCAA Division II player with a 2,000 rushing yards in a season by gaining 252 yards on 37 carries at Ferris State … he finished the year at 2,065 (10th highest total in D-II history) … Bell also accumulated 305 all-purpose yards in Saturday’s game to break the GLIAC single-season mark of 2,315 set by FSU’s Clarence Coleman in 2001, finishing with 2,352 all-purpose yards in league games … Bell also had the sixth-best single-season average per carry at 5.93 (2,065 yards on 348 attempts) … his 2,105 yards of total offense was the fourth best in a year in WSU history … WSU’s offensive line consisted of one senior (Grant Fodor), one junior (Frank Lietke), two sophomores (Ryan Cue and Chris Ostosh) and a redshirt freshman (Ray Rocheleau) … all the back-ups except senior Merrick Steele, were either freshmen or sophomores … freshman quarterback Trent Pohl (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) recorded the 10th best single-season passing efficiency rating in school history … sophomore Dante Dunn’s (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) 26.76 yards per kickoff return was the second-highest single-season mark in school history (Don Robinson average 27.50 on 10 kickoff returns in 1971) … senior defensive ends Chris Smilo (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Canton) and Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) recorded two and one sacks, respectively, to finish the year with 11 and 10 tackles for loss, respectively to lead the squad … both also forced a fumble on Saturday … WSU’s rushing total of 2,210 yards was the fifth highest in school history and the most since 1977, while the 24 rushing touchdowns tied for third best.
