The Eagles have lost their last two home games to finish the year with a 2-3 mark at Community Stadium, the first losing season at home since 2003…senior DE Matt Baughman (Massillon, OH/Perry) had one of the best games of his career against Findlay, posting 6 tackles (4 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss (16 yards) and 1 sack (6 yards)…tailback Blaine Maag (Columbus Grove, OH) has 399 yards rushing. That’s the highest rushing total by an AU freshman since Paul Bockmore ran for 624 yards in 1999.

Senior kicker Josh Eichler’s (Tomball, Texas) 52 yard field goal against Grand Valley State Saturday (10/28) not only represented a career high, but tied for the fourth longest field goal since at least 1990. Doc Proctor (1996-99), who kicked a school-record 62-yarder versus Michigan Tech (10/23/99), connected on a 52-yard field goal at Ashland in 1998 (10/17). Eichler’s previous career best was a 37-yarder the previous week (10/21) at Ashland... Ferris State’s 1,596 rushing yards in its nine outings this campaign presently represents the 12th-highest season total in the program’s history, bettering the 1,593 yards on the ground in the 2004 season. The Bulldogs need nine more rushing yards to match the 11th-place 1,605 yards total set in 1987. FSU is 18 points shy of tying its 258 points in 2002, which currently ranks as the 12th-highest single-season output in the Bulldogs’ all-time annals... Sophomore defensive tackle Jake Visser’s (Coopersville) team-leading 9.5 pass sacks for -59 yards in nine games this season ties for the 12th-most single-season sacks in FSU history.

The Oilers defeated Ashland last Saturday 7-0…The win snapped a seven game losing streak on the season and a 15 game conference losing streak dating back to last year…The shutout was the first since defeating Mercyhurst, 44-0, in the final game of the 2004 season…Defensively, the Oilers dominated the game from start to finish, allowing only 61 yards of total offense including negative 11 yards rushing…The Oilers also forced four turnovers and had 13 tackles for a loss in the win… Offensively, sophomore running back Melvin Jackson led the charge, rushing the ball for a school record 41 times en route to a career-high 126 yards and one touchdown…The only score of the game, Jackson found the end zone with 12:00 to play in the third quarter…Jackson’s 41 carries broke the previous record of 40, held by Findlay greats Nelson Boldon and Robert Campbell. Boldon set his mark during the 1978 season against Missouri Valley College while Campbell achieved the feat in 2002 against Ferris State University… Senior defensive back Nick Notario had six tackles and two interceptions in the win.

Gannon dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 decision to Michigan Tech last Saturday when a two-point conversion was knocked down with 10 seconds remaining … the Golden Knights trailed 14-0 in the fourth quarter, but engineered two touchdowns with back-up quarterback Vinnie DeLuca (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) at the helm … DeLuca’s 33-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-10 with 10 seconds remaining cut the lead to 14-13 prior to the failed conversion … Dan Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) set a career-high in tackles (17), including 10 in the second half … Tomko, who has 32 tackles in the last two weeks, needs two tackles to become the sixth player in school history to record 100 in a single season … Evan Euler (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) averaged 43.8 yards on five punts despite battling winds gusts of 30-35 miles per hour and periods of driving rain … Euler kicked a season-high 63-yard punt that rolled dead at the Tech 2-yard line in the second quarter … Sam Culberth (Tampa, Fla./Chamberlain) hauled in five catches for 78 yards, becoming the first player in school history to record 2,000 career receiving yards … Matt Butler (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) moved into fourth place all-time at Gannon in career total offense (3,346) before leaving the game in the fourth quarter … Walter Dudley (Columbus, Ohio/Beechcroft) recorded his first career interception in the second quarter.

Grand Valley State has won 9-of-the-last-10 games versus Ferris State...GVSU won its 80th game since 2000 and improved to 79-5 in its last 84 games...GVSU is 52-3 in its last 55 GLIAC games...The Laker senior class improved to 46-4...QB Cullen Finnerty extended his NCAA all-division record for wins by a starting QB to 45. Finnerty is 45-4 as a starting QB...GVSU improved to 44-2 when being ranked number one...The Lakers have held the top spot in the AFCA poll for 21 straight weeks...DL Mike McFadden (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) became the all-time QB sack leader in DII history at Ferris State. McFadden recorded one QB sack versus the Bulldogs, giving his 33.5 in his career. Adam McGurk of Adams State previously held the record (32.5)...Cullen Finnerty (Brighton, Mich.) has 11,461 yards of total offense in his career, trailing former Laker Curt Anes by 390 yards. His total offense total is seventh in D-II history. Finnerty has accounted for 116 career TDs (89 passing-27 rushing) and his 89 passing TDs ranks 15 in D-II history...GVSU has held its last three opponents to two TDs in the last 12 quarters. The Lakers have held 5-of-9 opponents to seven points or less this season...GVSU has held four opponents under 100 yards passing for the season.

The second trip to Tiffin University in two years did not bring any more luck to the Hillsdale College football team, who lost to the 18th-ranked Dragons 24-14…In the meeting between the two teams in 2005, at the same location, Hillsdale came home with a 24-7 win…The Dragons are 2-1 all-time vs. Hillsdale…Junior quarterback Mark Nicolet set a new career-high in passing yards for the second time in three weeks, this time throwing for 286 yards against Tiffin…Nicolet’s previous career high was 283 yards in the team’s Oct. 14 loss to Wayne State…The Charger defense held Tiffin to 95 passing yards, a season-low…The Chargers came into the game leading the GLIAC in fourth-down conversions on the season with 13,. But were 0-for-4 against Tiffin…The Chargers will honor their senior class on Saturday in their final home game of the season against the University of Findlay…No one on Hillsdale’s current roster has experienced a win over Findlay, as the Oilers have won four straight meetings with the Chargers.

Greyhounds

The Greyhounds dominated the statistics in their 23-16 loss at SVSU. UIndy ran a whopping 86 offensive plays to just 35 for the Cardinals … The Hounds held the ball more than its opponent at almost a two-to-one margin (39:51 – 20:09) … The Greyhounds outgained the Cardinals (416 to 233) … Indianapolis compiled 27 first downs while SVSU mustered just 6 … Freshman kicker Kyle Mossbrucker connected on all three field goal attempts in the heavy wind, giving him a string of five straight makes … The Greyhounds have allowed just 409 yards rushing in five road games this season (81.8 ypg) … With his TD catch in the third quarter against SVSU, junior Justin Russell is now tied for sixth in the UIndy record books for TD receptions in a season (8) … Junior tailback Craig Jenkins needs just 62 yards to become the seventh Greyhound to break the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season.

The Lakers won on Senior Day, 32-7 over Northern Michigan…Richard Stokes rushed for 122 yards on 24 carries and two TDs in a 32-7 win over NMU. He had touchdown runs of 32 and seven yards. It was his second straight 100-yard game, third of the season and fourth of his career. He also blocked a punt on special teams that resulted in a Laker touchdown drive…Bryan Boyce tied for the game-high with 11 tackles in a 32-7 win over Northern Michigan. He added a pair of pass break ups as the Lakers held the GLIAC’s top passing offense to 43 yards below its season average and to just 12-of-35 passing. Both break ups came in on series where Mercyhurst forced turnovers on downs… MC rushed for a season-high 196 yards in the win… Brandon Hill caught four passes for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Huskies

Tailback Lee Marana (Ishpeming, Mich./Westwood) rushed for 192 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries at Gannon last Saturday (Oct. 28). The senior now owns 4,609 career rushing yards and needs 180 more in the Huskies’ final game at Findlay (Nov. 11) to become the school’s career rushing record holder. Jim VanWager (1973-67) is the current record holder at 4,788 yards, while Jeremy Monroe (1990-93) is second on the list at 4,695 yards . . . Michigan Tech won its fifth consecutive game to advance its record over .500 (5-4) for the first time on the season . . . Including last Saturday’s (Oct. 28) 14-13 win at Gannon, the Huskies are 9-0 all time against teams from Erie, Pa. (3-0 vs. Gannon and 6-0 vs. Mercyhurst) . . . Tech has held five consecutive opponents to 14 points or less. In addition, none of the last five opponents has rushed for 100 yards.

NMU will play its final two games of the 2006 season at home in the Superior Dome, first up is Gannon on Saturday…NMU scored its first rushing touchdown since the Saginaw Valley State Game (Sept. 23) when Mark Bossuah scored in the third quarter on a three-yard run…The Wildcats failed to score a touchdown via the air for the first time this season against Mercyhurst…The NMU defense had its first interception (Jon Hoggard) against the Lakers since the Hillsdale game (Sept. 9)… Hoggard leads NMU with three interceptions… Buddy Rivera had 223 yards of total offense against the Lakers… Fred Wells had a game-high five receptions for 106 yards against Mercyhurst and now has 36 for the season which ties him with Dan Elmore for the team lead.

No. 17 Northwood ran its record to 7-1 on the season with a 48-34 victory over Wayne State ... Northwood has now gone 26-6 over the past three seasons ... the Timberwolves rushing attack had its finest day of the season, finishing the game with 495 yards rushing ... NU nearly had four players finish with over 100 yards rushing ... Antonie Ivy (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) finished just short of 100 with a career-high 92 yards, but he tied a school record by scoring four touchdowns ... the last NU player to score four rushing touchdowns was Pernell Jackson against Indianapolis in the 2003 season ... quarterback Kyle Kolbe (Clare, Mich.) led the team with 151 yards on the ground, while Casey Steffen (Flat Rock, Mich.) had a career-high 142 yards and a touchdown ... Torris Childs (N. Chicago, Ill.) finished with 110 yards and two TD’s to round out NU’s rushing output ... the previous team high total in rushing in the GLIAC was by Michigan Tech, who finished with 366 yards against Northern Michigan last weekend ... Northwood’s total is also the second-highest in Division II this season - Mars Hill put up 499 yards against Greensboro Sept. 2 ... the Timberwolves now lead the GLIAC in rushing yards (2,259), average per carry (6.0) and rushing touchdowns (29).

The Cardinals defeated Indianapolis for the 15th straight time on Saturday for their longest current win streak versus any opponent...Vinnie Miroth (Cameron Park, Calif.) finished 10-of-14 through the air for 196 yards and two TD’s, posting a pass efficiency rating of 236.17. Miroth has a efficiency rating of 127.37 this season and has completed 52.1 percent of his throws with nine TD’s... Redshirt freshman Mike LeVand (Grandville, Mich.) had a career day versus Indy with nine tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one half sack. LeVand now has 31 tackles this season and has forced two fumbles...Junior Ric Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) hauled a team-long 70-yard TD reception on a screen and finished the game with three grabs for 93 yards. Cottengim caught his 19th career TD and also eclipsed 1,700 receiving yards and 90 receptions.

Wayne State dropped its first road game of the season on Saturday to fall to 3-1 away from Detroit … the Warrior defense has allowed 820 yards rushing the last two games after Northwood gained 495 yards on 51 carries … WSU allowed just 687 rushing yards in the first seven games … senior wide receiver Jake Weingartz (Lapeer, Mich./East) recorded his first 100-yard receiving game with three catches for 114 yards … he had a 40-yard TD reception from Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.), a 49-yard reception from Trent Pohl (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) that set up WSU’s final touchdown, after a 25-yard catch from Pohl … Bell had a “hat trick” of touchdowns with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter, the aforementioned first quarter TD pass to Weingartz, and a receiving touchdown just before halftime … WSU’s third quarter TD drive of 95 yards ties a season-long set against Grand Valley … Bell set WSU single-season records for rushing yards (1,663), touchdowns scored (19), points (114) and GLIAC rushing yards (1,553 – Michael Simpson of Findlay had 1,545 in 2004).
