Eagles
Junior guard Bret Wackerly (Canton, OH/Canisius) scored 38 points in the overtime loss to Hillsdale last week. That’s the third consecutive game Wackerly scored 33 or more points. The 38 points is a career high and is the largest scoring outburst by an Ashland player since Randall Scott scored 38 points against Gannon on Feb. 5, 1998. Wackerly is averaging a team-high 17.7 ppg…last week’s loss snapped a four-game AU winning streak and ended a five-game winning streak against Hillsdale…the loss leaves Ashland with a 6-2 card at home. The Eagles play their next four games away from home. Six of AU’s next eight contests are on the road and all are GLIAC games…AU has scored 100 or more points three times this season. The last time the Eagles did that was in 2003-04 when they reached the century mark three times…while the Eagles have struggled to rebound consistently this year, they are starting to get more help on the glass from their guards. A week ago, senior Steve Gansey (Olmsted Falls, OH/Cleveland State) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against Rio Grande. Against Hillsdale, senior guard Brett Bartlett (LaGrange, OH/Kent State) tied his career high with seven boards.

FSU reversed the score on Tiffin (Ohio) Saturday (Jan. 5) as the Bulldogs posted their third consecutive victory of the season with a 72-62 triumph over the visiting Dragons at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich... The Bulldogs, who suffered an identical 72-62 setback on the road against Tiffin earlier this year (Dec. 8), took a slim 32-29 halftime advantage before outscoring TU 40-33 in the final period... FSU is currently midst a three-game homestand and notched the program’s 950th all-time victory with the win over Tiffin... Freshman F/C Justin Keenan (Grand Rapids/Ottawa Hills) netted a game-best and personal career-high 25 points and 14 rebounds while playing only 18 total minutes in Ferris’ 88-69 non-league home win Thursday (Jan. 3) over Kuyper College. He then chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds as the Bulldogs defeated Tiffin. Keenan averaged 20 points and 10.5 rebounds in the two contests while shooting 60% from the floor in both contests. He was also 10-of-15 (.667) from the free throw stripe.

Oilers
The Oilers picked up a pair of home GLIAC wins during the week to improve to 12-2 on the season…Findlay defeated Wayne State 55-53 and Hillsdale 82-60…The wins extended their regular season home winning streak to 53 games…The Oilers are now 92-4 at Croy Gymnasium in the last five years… Junior center Lee Roberts led the Oilers by averaging 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game…Roberts only missed two shots during the two wins, connecting on 13-of-15 field goal attempts…He currently leads the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage at 74.7…In the win over the Chargers, junior guard Aaron Laflin tied a career-high with 14 points and also tied another career-high with three steals…The Oilers were aided in the win by a 24-1 in the final nine minutes of the first half…Sophomore guard Marcus Parker had seven steals in the two wins and is averaging a GLIAC best 3.2 per game…The Oilers forced 43 turnovers in the two games…They also came up with 21 steals.

Gannon extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with two road victories last week at Northwood (74-52) and Mercyhurst (66-57) … the Golden Knights are 12-1 for the first time since the 2001-02 squad won its first 14 games … Gannon is 4-0 on the road this season after going 2-18 on the road during the previous two seasons … Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) set a career-high with 21 points at Northwood and then reset the mark with 26 points at Mercyhurst … recorded his second double-double in the last three games with 11 boards at Mercyhurst … Gannon shot 62.5 percent at Northwood and out-scored the Timberwolves 48-28 in the paint … Vince Mosley (Boynton Beach, Fla./Dillard) averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds last week … Mosley has scored at least 13 points in every game and at least 18 points in each of the last four … Gannon has not been out-rebounded in 14 consecutive games dating back to last season … the Golden Knights trailed at halftime at Mercyhurst for only the second time this season.

GVSU is holding opponents to just 54.9 points per game and GVSU has held 10-of-its-last-14 foes under 55 points, including four under 50 points...Laker opponents are shooting just 37.9 percent from the floor...Grand Valley State is outscoring the opposition by 21.1 points per game...Jason has scored in double figures 11 times this season...Grand Valley State’s 16-0 start is the best in school history. The 1976-77 hoops squad was 15-1 after 16 games...Jason Jamerson ranks 1st in Laker annals in three-pointers made (250), 9th in points scored with 1,421 points and 6th in all-time steals (150). Jamerson needs 66 points to move into fifth in career scoring...Callistus Eziukwu moved into the eighth spot in all-time points scored with 1,319. Eziukwu is 8th in career rebounds with 722 and first in all-time blocks with 272...His 272 blocked shots ranks 11th all-time in DII...Ric Wesley, who is in his fourth year as head men’s basketball coach, upped his record to 90-19 overall.

Hillsdale picked up possibly its most significant win in many years in Thursday night’s thrilling 112-110 overtime win over Ashland on the road…The win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Eagles, and was the first win by Hillsdale over Ashland since the 2004-05 season finale…The 112 points scored by Hillsdale are the most it’s had in a game since December 2002, when Hillsdale defeated U-M Dearborn 112-76…Three players scored 27 or more points in the win…Saturday, the Chargers lost to Findlay for the 34th time in 39 all-time meetings, 82-60…The Oilers held Hillsdale 26 points below its league-leading 86 points-per-game average… Several Hillsdale players rank among the league leaders in various statistical categories…Junior Tony Gugino leads the GLIAC with a 20 points per game average, and is second in total blocked shots with 33…Junior Keith MacKenzie is averaging a GLIAC-leading 5.54 assists per game, and senior Tim Homan leads the GLIAC with 48 3-point field goals made this season…Homan’s .533 3-point field goal percentage also leads the conference… Hillsdale will host Lake Superior State University Thursday in its only home game during a 47-day stretch from Dec. 8 through Jan. 24.

LSSU moved into second place in the GLIAC North Division after splitting last week’s home games against Saginaw Valley State and Northwood. By winning 73-65 on Saturday, the Lakers improved to 1-1 for the season against the Timberwolves … Sophomore guard Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio) averaged 15.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 5.5 apg to lead LSSU last week. His 21 points against SVSU was his second-highest scoring total of the season, and his eight assists against NU was a career high…Junior center Ryan Kuhl (Rochester, Mich.) totaled a career-high 14 rebounds during Thursday’s 50-49 loss to SVSU…The Lakers’ forty-nine point total against SVSU was the Lakers’ was the lowest point total since losing 82-48 to Grand Valley State on Feb. 1, 2007…LSSU coach Steve Hettinga, whose team has won four of its last five games, improved his career record to 99-115. His record includes seven seasons at Olivet College and one at MacMurray College.

Lakers
Mercyhurst entered the week winning three of its last four, and despite a strong first half effort, the Lakers suffered a 66-57 loss to rival Gannon on Saturday evening in front of the biggest crowd of the season (1,385)... The Lakers had also won three of four against Gannon, including a two-game sweep in 2006-07... Through 20 minutes, the Lakers held a four point lead at the half and led by as many as 11. Gannon pulled away in the second after the Mercyhurst shooters cooled off, finishing the game with 42.6 percent shooting. On the season, Mercyhurst is 1-5 when shooting lower than 45 percent from the field...Gannon pulled down 14 offensive rebounds against Mercyhurst, which is tied for second most by any team this season. Senior T.J. Mathis recorded four steals in the first 4:23 of the game and finished the game with a team-high five. He entered the game ranked second in the conference and tied for the team lead with Terry Smith.

Michigan Tech ranks second in the GLIAC in free throw percentage (75.7) and fourth in points allowed (64.2 per game) … Junior Robby Springborn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) scored a team-high 17 points vs. Grand Valley State last Saturday (Jan. 5). The 5-11 guard has led the team in scoring three straight games with a 21.0 average over that span. Springborn averages 10.7 points on the season … Senior Tim Strom (Marquette, Mich.) is nearing a couple of career milestones. The 6-7 forward needs 33 points for 1,000 and 21 rebounds for 500 in his career … Tech has 13 games left with eight of those coming at home and only five on the road. The Huskies are 3-1 at the SDC Gym this season.

NMU will hit the road this week to face Saginaw Valley and Northwood…Last week the Wildcats only had one game which was against Grand Valley State…Three ‘Cats ended the game with the Lakers in double figures, Jake Suardini led the way with 16 points as he was followed by Jerard AJami with 12 and Tyler Kazmierkoski with 11…The same three players are the only players on the team averaging over 10 points a game, Suardini (14.6 ppg), Kazmierkoski (12.6 ppg) and Ajami (12.3 ppg)…Suardini (4.2 rpg) and Kazmierkoski (4.2 rpg) share the team lead in rebounds… Suardini also leads the ‘Cats in steals (22)…Ajami has 38 assists to pace NMU.

Timberwolves
The Northwood men’s basketball team dropped a pair of games last week, falling in a non-GLIAC contest to Gannon before losing at Lake Superior … the Timberwolves are now 5-7 overall, 2-3 in the GLIAC … opponents had a hot week shooting from the floor, connecting on 56.9 percent of their attempts (58-102) … Gannon provided most of the offense – the Golden Knights finished their game against NU shooting 62.5 percent (30-48) … the Timberwolves trailed by as many as 18 in the first half against Lake Superior, but the Timberwolves rallied in the second half … NU shot 60.0 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes (18-30) to get within four with the ball, but NU would get no closer … Antonio Harrison (Southfield, Mich.) led NU in scoring in the two games, averaging 12.0 points per game … he had a big second half against LSSU, finishing with 13 points and four assists after the break … Northwood has three conference game over a five day stretch this upcoming week – NU hosts Michigan Tech Thursday and Northern Michigan Saturday before traveling to Ferris State Monday night.

The Cardinals won their only game action of the week Thursday night when they won at Lake Superior State 50-49…SVSU forced 13 turnovers while LSSU shot just 32.1 percent from the floor in the win…Mike Zuiderveen (Kalamazoo, Mich./KVCC) recorded his fifth double-double of the season in the win with 12 points and 12 rebounds…Zuiderveen currently leads the GLIAC in rebounds per game with 11.8…Lawrence Ross (Battle Creek, Mich./Miami, Ohio) and Mario Mackey (Aurora, Colo./Idaho) currently rank seventh and eighth in the GLIAC in points per game…Ross and Mackey also are tied for seventh in the conference with an average of 3.67 assists per game…Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich./E. Tenn. St.) leads the Cardinals with 32 three-point field goals and a .444 percentage from beyond the arc…Adrian Taylor (Christchurch, New Zealand) is shooting .545 from the floor and .529 in SVSU’s five conference games this season.

Wayne State (8-4) will play 13 of its final 14 regular-season games against GLIAC opponents with the lone exception being Feb. 13 at California (Pa.) … the Warriors will be on the road for three of the next four games starting Wednesday at Ferris State … WSU’s only previous Wednesday contest this season was a 93-77 setback at Central State … Wayne State held Findlay to a season-low 55 points last Thursday and marked the fifth time this year that WSU held an opponent below 60 points … Wayne State made two more field goal attempts and out rebounded the much taller Oiler squad 28-23 which included 15 offensive rebounds for WSU to 15 defensive rebounds for UF … senior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) tied for game-high scoring honors with 14 points … Saddler had 12 points (on 6-of-9 shooting) and five rebounds in the second half.
