Eagles
The Eagles begin this week with a four-game winning streak. Last weekend, Ashland won the championship of the Ashland Holiday Inn Express Tournament. AU has won the tourney title 10 times (the event has been held 11 years). Junior guard Bret Wackerly (Canton, OH/Canisius) had consecutive 33-point games to lead the Eagles to the championship. Over his last five games, Wackerly has averaged 19.8 ppg., 6.0 apg., and 1.6 spg. His 33-point games represent the most points scored by an AU player this year... In the tournament title game against Aquinas, Ashland fell behind 13-0 and trailed at halftime, 40-26. AU’s first lead didn’t come until there was 4:44 left in regulation. The Eagles won the contest, 67-62. That’s the first time Ashland has won while scoring less than 70 points since beating Gannon, 60-49 during the 2005-06 campaign…the Eagles don’t have a non-conference game the rest of the season. They are 6-4 outside the GLIAC this season…this week, the Eagles host Hillsdale. In the first meeting of the season, Ashland won, 95-80 behind a 32-point effort by senior guard Brett Bartlett (LaGrange, OH/Kent State). AU has won the last five meetings against the Chargers…after the Hillsdale game, Ashland plays four consecutive road contests.

Ferris State split a pair of games last weekend (Dec. 28-29) in the 16th annual AT&T Alascom Jamboree played at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage, Alaska. FSU dropped a 71-45 decision to event host Alaska-Anchorage in Friday’s (Dec. 28) opening day of action before rebounding to beat Alaska-Fairbanks 64-56 in Saturday’s (Dec. 29) final day of play. Freshman center Justin Keenan (Grand Rapids/Ottawa Hills) was chosen as the Player of the Game following the win over the Nanooks and also received All-Jamboree honors for his efforts in the two contests. The win over Alaska-Fairbanks snapped a six-game Bulldog losing streak and ended a seven-game stretch away from Jim Wink Arena, which covered the entire month of December... FSU returns home to open the New Year against Grand Rapids-based Kuyper College Thursday, Jan. 3, at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Thursday’s outing will represent the Bulldogs’ first home contest since defeating Saginaw Valley State 68-66 in the squad’s GLIAC opener back on Nov. 29.

Oilers
The Oilers improved to 10-2 on the season with four wins over the break…Findlay defeated Lake Erie 76-66, won against Rio Grande 94-45, defeated Shawnee State 92-67 and then closed the stretch out with a 64-60 victory against Wisconsin-Parkside …The four home wins gives them 51 straight regular season victories in Croy Gymnasium… Junior forward Morgan Lewis led the Oilers to four wins over the break by averaging 17.8 points per game…Lewis connected on 65.9 percent (27-of-41) of his field goal attempts and also averaged 5.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks per game…His 11 rebounds against Lake Erie set a new career-high while his 24 points against Shawnee State also established a new career-high…Sophomore guard Marcus Parker was quite the thief during the four games, registering 20 steals which included a career-high seven against Rio Grande…He also established a new career-high with 19 points against Shawnee State.

Golden Knights
Gannon posted a perfect 4-0 record during the holiday break … the Golden Knights are 10-1 for the first time since 2002-03 … Gannon has already won one more game than it did during the entire 2006-07 season … the Golden Knights have out-rebounded their opponent during every game this season … Vince Mosley (Boynton Beach, Fla./Dillard) averaged 18.8 points and 8.5 rebounds during the last four games … Mosley was named to the Porreco Cup All-Tournament team after recording 44 points and 18 rebounds in two games … Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) was named Porreco Cup MVP after scoring 41 points in two games, hitting 18-of-23 shots … Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was also named to the all-tournament team with 31 points, 19 rebounds, and seven blocks in two games … Mosley recorded his first double-double at Gannon with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Seton Hill … Goldcamp produced his first double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against Bowie State … GUplays 15 of its final 16 regular-season games against GLIAC opponents.

GVSU is off to its best start in school history (14-0)...During a recent four-game stretch over the Holiday’s, GVSU shot 54.3 percent from the floor (114-210), while holding its opponents to 36.7 percent shooting from the floor. GVSU outrebounded its opponents by a 34.8-28.3 margin and recorded 39 steals compared to just 23 for its opponents...Jason Jamerson scored a career-high 36 points versus Aquinas College and tied his career-high for three-pointers made with seven...Jason moved into ninth on the all-time scoring list for the Lakers’ with 1,396 points...Senior Nick Freer scored a career-high 23 points at Indianapolis, while Justin Ringler scored a career-high 17 points at Tiffin...Freer averaged 13.3 points over the last four games, while Ringler averaged 11.0.

After a welcome break in the schedule, the Hillsdale College men’s basketball team is gearing up for a return to GLIAC play with four of its next five games on the road…The Chargers are 7-4 under first-year had coach John Tharp after going 2-1 over Christmas break…The team played back-to-back overtime games, splitting two contests against St. Francis (Ill.) and Lewis University…Hillsdale is 2-1 in overtime games this season…Junior Travis Worst had his best offensive set of games in his career, averaging 22 points per game in the team’s last three games…He exceeded his career-high in scoring twice during that stretch, including a career-high 26 points in a win over Saginaw Valley Dec. 29…The Chargers swept both games from the Cardinals, averaging 96.5 points in the two games…Hillsdale leads the GLIAC in points per game with 84.5 this season.

After opening the season with seven straight losses, LSSU is enjoying its first three-game win streak since the Lakers ended the 2005-06 season with three straight victories…On Jan. 3 when they play host to SVSU, the Lakers have a chance to win four straight for the first time since they won six in a row in 2002-03…LSSU held previously undefeated Central State to a season-low 75 points to win 86-75 on Dec. 21. Junior guard Tim VanOudheusden (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored 15 points to lead six LSSU players in double figures…VanOudheusden is ranked 21st in the GLIAC in scoring (13.1 ppg), 19th in rebounding (5.0 rpg), 14th in field-goal percentage (.549) and 14th in free-throw percentage (.722)…Freshman guard Micah Hudson (Jackson, Mich.) is tied for fourth in the league in 3-pt. field-goal percentage (.500), while sophomore guard Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio) is tied for 13th (.455).

Lakers
Mercyhurst closed out 2007 by splitting a pair of games against WVIAC teams. In the Dec. 17 win over Ohio Valley, the Lakers racked up a season-high 92 points and won by the largest margin of victory all season. The Lakers recorded a season-high 24 assists. All but nine of the team’s field goals were assisted. Mercyhurst had its best shooting night in three years as it torched the nets for 60 percent shooting from the field, including 14-of-25 shooting from behind the arc... Against the Fighting Scots, the Lakers set five season highs as a team and 17 individual season highs. Seven Lakers recorded at least two assists, and Srdjan Popovic recorded a career high of four. Terry Smith scored 21 points giving him four 20-point performances this season after recording none in 2006-07. In those four games, the Lakers are 3-1.

MTU went 2-1 in three non-conference games over the holidays with a 73-37 home win over Finlandia (Dec. 18), an 82-57 home victory vs. Minnesota Duluth (Dec. 21) and a 58-57 loss at Southern Indiana (Dec. 30) … Junior guard Robby Springborn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) registered 56 points in the three games include 20-point efforts in each of the final two contests. The 5-11 Springborn tallied a career-high 24 points vs. UMD and added 22 more at USI … Tech has 14 games left on its 2007-08 regular season schedule. All 14 are conference games, with nine coming at home and five on the road … The Huskies game vs. No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 5) will be their second against a ranked opponent this season and first against a team ranked that high since a GLIAC Tournament semifinal vs. No. 2 Findlay on Mar. 4, 2005 … Junior Fedrick Bowe (Freeport, Bahamas) is averaging 9.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game since Dec. 1. The 6-5 forward is even better in home games, with averages of 12.7 points and 11.0 rebounds — both team highs for home games only.

NMU will only have one game this week as the Wildcats are back in conference play when the Lakers of Grand Valley State will visit the Berry Events Center on Thursday (Jan. 3)…Before the break, NMU lost its first OT game of the season on the road to St. Norbert…NMU scored a season-low 49 points against South Dakota at the Augustana Tournament, then came back the next night to score 66 points for a season high…Tyler Kazmierkoski tied a season-high with 21 points against Augustana…Sebastien Salois was the lone ‘Cat in double-figures in the second South Dakota game as he had 17…Three players on the roster are averaging over 12 points a game, leading the way is Jake Suardini (14.5 ppg), Kazmierkoski (12.8 ppg) and Jerard Ajami (12.3)…The top three rebounders on the team are all over four rebounds a game, Suardini (4.4 rpg), Kazmierkoski (4.3 rpg) and Salois (4.1 rpg).

NU went 1-3 over the break, defeating Marygrove while losing to Tiffin, Lewis and Gannon … NU’s shooting struggled during the break, shooting 41.2 percent from the floor, 32.6 percent from 3-point range and 48.5 percent from the foul line … three Timberwolves averaged more than 10 points per game over the last four games, led by Aaron Simpson (Detroit, Mich./Jesuit) and Mark Barnes (Saginaw, Mich.) – both averaged 11.3 points per game … Antonio Harrison (Southfield, Mich.) chipped in 10.3 points per game … Barnes also averaged a team-best 11.5 rebounds per game … he has five double-doubles on the season, including three in the last four games … Barnes had 16 rebounds against both Marygrove and Lewis … he currently ranks second in the GLIAC at 10.4 boards per game.

The Cardinals finished off the year going 1-2, with the victory coming at St. Joseph’s on Dec. 19 by a score of 72-69… Senior Mike Zuiderveen (Kalamazoo, Mich./KVCC) set career highs with 19 points and 18 rebounds in SVSU’s 94-78 loss to Hillsdale on Saturday, December 29…Hillsdale was the seventh game that Zuiderveen reached double figures in rebounds…Mario Mackey (Aurora, Colo./Idaho) scored a season high 25 points in the loss to Hillsdale …Lawrence Ross (Battle Creek, Mich./Miami, Ohio) has scored in double figures in all but one game this season… Mackey (17.1) and Ross (17.0) rank seventh and eighth respectively in the GLIAC in points per game…Zuiderveen (11.8) currently leads the GLIAC in rebounds per game…Mackey (39.36) and Ross (39.27) rank first and second respectively in minutes played per game, while Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich./E. Tenn. St.) and Zuiderveen also make the top ten.

Wayne State snapped its two-game losing streak with an 66-59 win over Shawnee State on the second day of the Findlay Holiday Classic last weekend … the win improved the Warriors record to 8-3 and earned coach David Greer his 99th victory at WSU … senior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) was selected WSU’s Most Outstanding Player after scoring 42 points, grabbing 18 rebounds, dishing out eight assists, and recording five steals in the two tournament games … sophomore Lendyn Davis (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) scored a game-high 20 points vs. SSU which included a career-high five three pointers … senior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) matched his career-high with 20 points against Wisconsin-Parkside … Sarden earned his sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds against the Bears ... Wayne State made a season-high 20 free throws (on 26 attempts) against Shawnee State… WSU will play its third consecutive game in Findlay’s Croy Gymnasium on Thursday, this time will be a GLIAC contest versus the Oilers.
