Redshirt freshman center Kale Richardson (Carroll, OH/Bloom-Carroll) posted the first double-double of his career with 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 90-82 setback at Mount Vernon Nazarene. MVN’s win over Ashland was the Cougars’ first in 10 tries. Mount Vernon Nazarene shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from three-point range in the win. AU leads the series, 9-1…in a season-opening win against Tiffin, AU shot 59.2 percent from the floor, 62.2 percent in the first half in mounting a 61-25 halftime lead on the way to a 111-59 triumph. That’s the first time AU scored 100 or more points since putting up 100 at Tiffin in the next-to-last game of the 2004-05 season. That is also Ashland’s highest output since scoring 118 points against Wilberforce in the fourth game of the 2003-04 season…this week, the Eagles will square off against two teams coached by former AU assistants. On Tuesday (Nov. 20) the Eagles will host Saint Joseph’s, which is coached by former AU guard and assistant coach Richard Davis. Later in the week the Eagles will travel south to the Florida Southern Classic where they will square off against Florida Southern, coached by former AU assistant Linc Darnerr.

The Ferris State University men’s basketball squad’s season opener Saturday (Nov. 17) evening was spoiled by Hillsdale as the Chargers used a strong second half spurt to pull out a 84-72 non-league triumph inside FSU’s Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich... The two teams battled nearly even throughout the initial half before the Chargers took a slim 34-30 edge at the break. However, Hillsdale outscored FSU 50-42 the rest of the way to notch the victory... Ferris eight freshmen in its first official contest of the year... Freshman guard Matt DeHart of Greenville led the Bulldogs with a team-high 15 points on a five-of-eight shooting performance from behind the three-point stripe. Fellow freshman forward/center Justin Keenan (Grand Rapids/Ottawa Hills) chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.

Oilers
The fifth ranked Oilers began the year with a pair of wins at the Lions Club Classic hosted by Northern Kentucky…Findlay shot 55.3 percent (52-of-94) from the field in their 79-63 win over #21 Christian Brothers and their 66-53 win over Northern Kentucky… The also hit 15-of-34 (44.1%) of their three point attempts during the two games…Against Christian Brothers, junior guard Tyler Evans was one point shy of tying his career-high after pumping in 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor…In Findlay’s win over Northern Kentucky, junior forward Josh Bostic had a career-high 29 points to go along with eight rebounds, four steals and three assists… Freshman forward Tyler Sparks came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, all in the second half…Junior forward Morgan Lewis also set a career-high in the game, grabbing eight rebounds.

Golden Knights
GU won its 12th consecutive season opener last Saturday with a 126-50 rout of Penn State Greater Allegheny … the Golden Knights fell four points shy of the school’s single-game scoring record (130) and 11 points shy of the school’s largest margin of victory (87) … Gannon is now 51-13 all-time in season openers, including a 42-5 mark in season openers that are played at home … the Golden Knights moved to 57-3 all-time at home when one of the participating teams score 100 points … eight Golden Knights reached double digits in scoring while 12 players saw at least 10 minutes of action … newcomers Vince Mosley (Boynton Beach, Fla./Dillard), Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom), and Dave Wilson (Vidalia, La./Vidalia) were co-scoring leaders with 16 points each … Gannon shot 68.2 percent (30-44) in the first half and ended the half with a 38-2 run to grab a 76-23 halftime lead … the Golden Knights, ranked last in the GLIAC last season in free throw percentage, hit 23 of 27 free throws.

Grand Valley State captured top honors in the Dedication Group at the Disney Classic in Orlando, Fla. at the Disney Wide World of Sports...GVSU defeated Columbus State (83-71), Stonehill (76-72) and Barry (53-46)...Senior guard Jason Jamerson was named the MVP and earned All-Tournament Team honors, while Pete Trammell and Callistus Eziukwu were also named to the Dedication Group All-Tournament Team...GVSU set a Disney Classic tournament record by hitting 56.0 percent of its three-pointers (28-50)...GVSU is hitting 51.6 percent of its three-pointers (32-62) this season...Junior forward Pete Trammell set a career-high with 28 points in the season-opener vs. Columbus State. Trammell was 7-9 from the floor, 5-5 from three-point land and 9-10 from the charity stripe... Senior center Callistus Eziukwu is averaging 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.90 blocked shots per game. Eziukwu is hitting 59.5 percent of his shots from the floor.

First-year head coach John Tharp went 1-1 in his first official week with the Chargers, the team losing at Bellarmine 80-71 and winning in a non-league game at Ferris State, 84-72…Tharp won more than 200 games in 13 seasons at Division III Lawrence University before coming to Hillsdale in March 2007…The Chargers play two GLIAC opponents in non-league games this season…The Ferris State game was the first, and Hillsdale will play at Saginaw Valley in a non-league game on Saturday, Dec. 29…The Chargers scored 97 points in the second halves of their two games last week…Junior Keith MacKenzie didn’t take a single two-point shot in Saturday’s win at Ferris State…MacKenzie was 5-for-8 in 3-point shots, and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line…Junior guard Evan Steward was 11-for-12 from the free throw line Saturday… Steward led the GLIAC in free throw percentage in 2006-07…Freshman Kody Kokx made his collegiate debut for the Chargers Saturday…Kokx had five points, three rebounds and five assists before fouling out of the game vs. the Bulldogs.

Junior Ryan Kuhl (Rochester, Mich.) averaged 11.5 points per game, and junior Tim VanOudheusden (Grand Rapids, Mich.) contributed 11.0 ppg to lead LSSU, which finished 0-2 at the GLIAC v. GLVC Challenge held last weekend in Kenosha, Wis. Sophomore Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio) added 10.0 ppg and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per game…LSSU heads to Aberdeen, S.D., for its first-ever meetings with Minnesota-Moorhead and Northern State on Nov. 23-24…LSSU has finished 0-2 in three straight GLIAC v. GLVC Challenges. The Lakers last victory over a GLVC opponent was 86-77 over Bellarmine on Nov. 17, 2002.

Lakers
The Mercyhurst Lakers opened the season with an impressive shooting display in their first three games. With a 2-1 record and wins over Roberts Wesleyan and Columbia Union, the team sank an impressive .527 percent of its field goal attempts and shot 47 percent from long range. Leading the three-point barrage was senior Terry Smith, who averaged 21.3 points per game, hitting 53 percent from the field and 48.3 percent from 3-point range. Smith totaled 25 in a 85-82 loss to Felician. Against Roberts Wesleyan, five players scored in double figures and three of those players were newcomers to the program. Freshman Srdjan Popovic totaled 16, Brian McTear scored 11 and junior Milos Bogetic recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. In the weekend’s final game at the Davis & Elkins Tip-Off Tournament, senior Luke Handley and freshman Patrick McLain each earned the first starts of their careers. McLain chipped in six points and three boards in 14 minutes.

Michigan Tech opened its 2007-08 men’s basketball season with the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge for the third consecutive year. The Huskies went to overtime against UW-Parkside last Friday (Nov. 16), marking the second straight season opener it has played an extra session against the Rangers … Senior Tim Strom (Marquette, Mich.) tallied 20 points vs. UWP and 21 more vs. Lewis on Saturday (Nov. 17). The 6-7 forward has now scored at least 20 points in three straight games dating back to last year’s GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal when he tallied 27 points at Northern Michigan … Junior Brandon Ball (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) started his first two games in a Husky uniform last weekend. The 5-11 point guard sat out 2006-07 due to conference transfer rules … Tech will renew one of its oldest rivalries Friday (Nov. 23) when it travels to play at Minnesota Duluth. The Huskies are 24-27 in 51 games all-time vs. the Bulldogs, and the series began in the 1948-49 season.

NMU played two exhibition games at the CBE Classic in East Lansing, Mich. at Michigan State…The Wildcats lost Louisiana-Monroe in the first game (60-53) and to Chicago St. in the second game (89-50)…The ‘Cats open the regular season on Monday night at UW-Stevens Point, and then will play at the UM-Duluth Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend against MSU-Mankato and UM-Duluth…Jerard Ajami led the ‘Cats against ULM with 27 points…Tyler Kazmierkoski led the ‘Cats against Chicago State with 18 points.

Northwood opened its season with a 91-63 loss to Spring Arbor Saturday afternoon … the Cougars shot 61 percent from 3-point range in the game, connecting on 14 of 23 attempts … junior guard Tony Marcotullio (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) led the way for the Timberwolves – he finished with 16 points on 6-8 shooting … he went 4-5 from 3-point range for the game … Northwood shot 40 percent from 3-point range for the game, making eight of 20 attempts … the Timberwolves will host Olivet in its lone action this week Tuesday night against Olivet … game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Cardinals
Saginaw Valley has started out the season 2-0, only the third time since 1995-96 season. If SVSU moves to 4-0 it will mark the first time since 94-95 that the Cardinals would have that mark to start a season. The Cardinals are averaging 86 points a game while only allowing just under 70. Senior Mike Zuiderveen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Valley C.C.) went nine-of-nine from the floor on 11-17-09 tying a school record for shooting percentage. SVSU is shooting .521 from the floor and .373 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals are in the midst of a brutal stretch where they play four games in seven nights.

Wayne State has started the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign … junior Lorenzo McClelland (Oak, Park, Mich.) led the Warriors in scoring in both contests recording 22 against Marygrove and 26 vs. SIUE …senior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) had his fifth career double-double in Saturday’s win over the Cougars with career-highs in points (20) and rebounds (20) …the 20 boards by a WSU player was the most since Brian Koscielski also had 20 rebounds in a 79-74 win at Oakland University on Feb. 5, 1994 … senior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) also had a double-double vs. SIUE with 15 points and 12 rebounds … WSU had to rally against SIUE after falling behind by 10 points with 8:19 remaining … WSU then reeled off 21 consecutive points for an 82-71 lead as the Warrior defense forced SIUE into six turnovers and a 0-9 mark from the floor during a 7:48 span …the 110 points scored against Marygrove was the most by a Warrior squad since Nov. 22, 2005, when WSU tallied 113 points, also against the Mustangs.
