Eagles
  In last week’s NCAA Division II statistics sophomore Ben Minard (Delaware, OH/Olentangy) was listed as the nation’s leading hitter. Minard, who is hitting .492. did nothing to hurt his cause last week. He hit .500 in six games…sophomore outfielder Tyson Rowland (Warren, OH/Warren Harding) was caught stealing once in last weekend’s four-game series with Hillsdale. That marks the first time this year he was caught on the basepaths. Rowland is 23-for-24 in stolen base attempts. Senior outfielder Jeff Yates (Wellington, OH) clubbed a pair of two-run homers, went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs in the second game of last Saturday’s twinbill with Hillsdale. Ashland won that game, 6-5. In Saturday’s first game, Yates rapped a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh to provide the margin of victory in a 4-3 AU win…the Eagles begin this week wins in nine of their last 11 games.

Oilers
  The Oilers finished the week with a 5-3 record… Senior Josh Barney etched his named into the record books once again for the Oilers as he completed last week with a win and two saves…Barney’s two saves during the week gives him nine on the season…The nine saves tops the school record of eight he had last season…He now has 25 career saves which is also a school record…Senior Brian Sampsel became the school’s single season record holder in doubles and now has 24 on the season…Senior George Rohan blasted his eighth homerun on the season and shares the school record now for most round trippers in a season…Rohan also has 42 RBI’s, only four away from tying senior Chad Geuy who set the single season record last year with 46.

Golden Knights
  Gannon went winless in six games last week against Mercyhurst and Saginaw Valley State … Jim Travers (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) improved his average 26 points to .333 with a 9-for-21 effort last week … Travers has raised her average 78 points since April 13 … Chris Miller (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) hit .316 last week and was the only Golden Knight to record a hit in every game during the Saginaw Valley State series … six Golden Knights hit .300 or better last week … Gannon’s 25-14 loss at Saginaw Valley State last Saturday was the highest combined score the Golden Knights have been involved in during the 2000s … Gannon is 6-0 when leading after the sixth inning this season.

  Grand Valley State was second in the most recent NCAA DII North Central Regional baseball rankings...Grand Valley State senior RF Derek Hinke (Cedar Rapids, IA) moved past the 100-RBI mark in just his second year with the Lakers. Hinke has 101 RBI in 94 career games...Senior CF Pat Radde (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills) moved into fourth in career at bats with 490 and fifth in career hits with 175...Radde is seventh in career runs with 116, and fifth in doubles with 32...Junior Casey Robrahn (Jenison, Mich.) moved into second on the GVSU all-time hits list with 188. Former LakerScott Allen leads the way with 238 career-hits. Robrahn is fifth in career at bats with 482 and 10th in all-time RBI with 110...Junior pitcher Andre Benjamin (Grand Ledge, Mich.) improved to 8-1 on the year. Benjamin’s eight wins in a single-season is the fourth-highest single-season total in GVSU history.

Chargers
  The Charger baseball team played all 16 of its home games this season during a 14-day span that concluded Wednesday afternoon…Hillsdale finished that home stretch with a bang, scoring 25 runs in a pair of wins over Rochester College, the most the team has scored in a two-game span this season…Sunday, the team won a game against a nationally ranked opponent for the second time this season , with both wins coming on the road…Hillsdale has defeated both Grand Valley State and Ashland on the road this season…Senior Tom Molter picked up two pitching wins during the week…Jesse Smith, Dan Fodell and Nate Chucta all had 10 or more hits during the team’s eight games last week…Hillsdale will wrap up its 2008 season this weekend with a four-game series at Gannon University.

Lakers

  The Mercyhurst Lakers worked their way through a 3-3 week that included a doubleheader sweep of Gannon under the lights at Jerry Uht Park in Erie and then winning one of four against Grand Valley State during the weekend. Wednesday’s doubleheader was the first time the two teams had met at the minor league stadium since 2004. The Lakers won the games by scores of 6-3 and 4-0 to give them three wins in four games against Gannon this season. The Lakers have now won 15 of the last 16 games against Gannon. Dan Bertolini went 6-for-8 on the day with two doubles, three runs in two games. He also went 4-for-4 in the second game, giving him his first four-hit game of the season. Steve Grife continued his dominating stretch in game two, pitching his first complete game shutout of the season despite working on three days rest. In his last three starters, he has totaled 26 strikeotus to just three walks while posting a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings of work. Joe Luli hit his third homer of the season, as well. Luli also hit a grand slam at Grand Valley State, as well. It was his first grand slam, the Lakers’ second of the season, and his team-leading fourth of the year. The loss in game one against Grand Valley State snapped the Lakers’ five-game winning streak, which was their longest of the season. But by winning game two, the Lakers earned their first win at Grand Valley State since 1998—a span of 12 games. James Ludwig increased his season total to 24 appearances with three more during the week. Freshman Nick Gillung improved to 2-0 with the win against GVSU. He has appeared in just six games but has won both of his starts and has struck out 22 batters in 18.1 innings for an average of 8.5 strikeouts per seven innings.

Timberwolves
   Northwood went 1-6 last week, defeating Alma College at Dow Diamond before falling to Saginaw Valley and Wayne State in GLIAC play ... the Timberwolves are now 19-23 overall, 6-20 in the GLIAC...Ben Shock (St. Johns, Mich.) hit .391 for the week to lead the Northwood offense...Clay Rosette (Hartland, Mich.) tied the Northwood school record for RBI’s in a season against Wayne State ... he currently has 50 on the season ... NU will host Rochester in its home finale Tuesday afternoon (April 30) before traveling to Grand Valley and Mercyhurst to finish its season.

Cardinals
  SVSU won all six of its games last week, pushing its win streak to nine games and its record to 28-12 overall and 16-8 in conference action…Reed Welker (Toledo, Ohio/St. John’s) hit three home runs last week, pushing his league-leading total to 11 for the season…Welker leads the GLIAC in home runs (11), RBI (51) and slugging percentage (.785)…Welker hit his 46th double of his career Sunday, pushing him to fourth place all-time in the SVSU record book…Welker also moved to tenth place all-time with 18 career home runs…Welker has hit in 18 consecutivegames…Brandon Fanion (Marysville, Mich.) hit his 19th career home run last week, the ninth best total in school history…Scott Roy (Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson) won his eighth game of the season Saturday, tied for the most in the conference…Roy’ win gave him 26 for his career, the third most in school history…Roy also ranks third in school history with 265 strikeouts and 271.1 innings pitched…Roy ranks third in the GLIAC in strikeouts (67) and fifth in ERA (3.66)…Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) hit five doubles, scored nine runs and tallied ten RBI last week…Thomas leads the Cardinals and is tied for second in the GLIAC with 12 times being hit by pitch…Max Bell leads the GLIAC in walks (34) and ranks second in on-base percentage (.510)…Andrew Doyle leads the conference in strikeouts (75), ranks second ERA and batting average against (.242) and third in innings pitched (58.1)…Fanion leads the GLIAC in hit batters (15)…Kevin Kerner (Richmond, Mich.) won his fifth game in as many starts against Gannon…Kerner struck out ten and did not walk a batter Sunday against Gannon…Jon Tibaudo (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) started his first two games of the season last week, winning both.

Warriors
    After defeating Tiffin twice Wednesday, the first-place Warriors swept Northwood over the weekend and clinched a berth in the GLIAC Tournament … freshman Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich.) went five innings in his first collegiate start Wednesday, surrendering just one run on three hits with five strikeouts as the Warriors beat the Dragons, 7-2, in game one … WSU improved to 10-4 all-time against Tiffin with a 10-4 win in the second game … after a resounding 18-6 win over Northwood in Saturday’s opener in which all nine starters had at least one hit and one RBI, Wayne State posted its highest single-game run total since 1999 in a 25-2 victory in the second game …matching their season-high with 22 hits, the Warriors won their 20th conference game of the season, second-most in school history since WSU joined the GLIAC in 1976 … the 23-run margin of victory is WSU’s largest since a 25-1 win over MIT in 1978 … Drew Churchward (Ann Arbor, Mich.) went 5-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored, becoming the first Warrior to total five hits in a game in five years … Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont.), who also drove in four runs in the first game Saturday, and Charlie Dunneback (Lansing, Mich.) each notched four RBI … 12 different WSU batters had at least one hit including all nine starters … WSU swept the series after an 8-3 and 12-6 win on Sunday. The Warriors outscored the Timberwolves, 63-17, and tallied 24 of their 63 runs (38 percent) in the first inning ... Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) has a 10-game hitting streak, tied for the second-longest of the season by a WSU player ... Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich.) is batting .500 (15-30) with 10 RBI and 14 runs scored during his current nine-game hitting streak ... Adam Kaminski (Clinton Twp., Mich.) and Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich.), who both hit over .600 last week, each have seven-game hitting streaks ... Williams also stole his 27th base of the season, which leads the GLIAC and is the sixth-highest single-season total in school history … Wayne State batted .467 as a team in the six games last week … the Warriors head to Saginaw Valley State for a doubleheader Wednesday at 2:00 before closing the regular season at home this weekend against Ashland.
