Ashland University
Eagles
The Eagles swept Slippery Rock last week, 6-1 and 5-0 and that put AU’s record against Pennsylvania Conference schools this year at 5-0…in the second game of the SRU doubleheader, AU pitching didn’t allow a hit until the seventh inning. Starter Ben Minard (Delaware, OH/Olentangy) went the first five innings. It took him 43 pitches to get through five frames. The only batter to reach against Minard got on via an error. Ashland pitching held The Rock to five hits in the two games…senior shortstop Chris Haycox (Springfield, OH/Springfield North) put together an 11-game hitting streak before being held hitless in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Tiffin. That’s the longest hitting streak by an AU player this season… Ashland is 18-1 when leading after six innings…Minard had a big week with the bat last week. In six games, he hit .813 with a slugging percentage of 1.063. Minard had a homer and 11 RBI and scored eight runs…AU has five players hitting .359 or better…Ashland has been successful on 52 of 59 stolen base attempts (88.1 percent)…the Eagles have won 10 of their last 12 games. Last week, all six games the Eagles played were outside the GLIAC. The rest of the schedule is made up entirely of GLIAC contests.

Oilers
The Oilers finished the week with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming at home to Heidelberg…In the GLIAC, the Oilers improved to 10-2 on the season by sweeping Northwood in four games on the road…Senior Kyle Blessing led the way by hitting .500 with three RBI’s and two runs scored…Senior George Rohan, who was named the GLIAC player of the week last week, continued his hot hitting by posting a .375 batting average with eight RBI’s and four runs scored during the Oilers five games…Senior Josh Barney picked up two saves during the week to give him seven on the season…Barney currently holds the school record for most saves in a season with eight, set during the 2007 campaign…Freshman Ryan Rothenbuhler and senior Caleb Meyer both picked up wins during the week to remain undefeated on the season…They are both 3-0…Junior Brian Sampsel continues to lead the offense with a .414 batting average and a GLIAC and team-high 16 doubles…The school record for doubles in a season is 20 set by Rob Talpas during the 2004 campaign.

Golden Knights
Gannon opened last week’s action with a non-conference split at Indiana (Pa.) before dropping all four weekend games at Grand Valley State … Tuesday’s twinbill at IUP was one of the biggest reversals anyone will see as IUP posted a 17-run scoring margin in the opener and Gannon reversed the roles with a 21-1 victory in the second game … it was the most runs scored in a game by a Gannon team during the 2000s … Chris Miller (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) raised his average 86 points last week by hitting .476 in six games … Miller was also perfect in 40 fielding opportunities, extending his errorless streak to 14 consecutive games and 116 fielding chances … Drew Rojek (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) recorded his first career victory and first career complete game during the victory at IUP, allowing only one run on five hits … Gannon has six players hitting .300 or better – Jonathan Dziomba (.358), Greg Radwan (.349), Ford Eisenman (.341), John Pichette (.333), Miller (.317), and Jim Travers (.302) … Gannon is 4-0 when leading after the sixth inning this season … Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis) and Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) are hitting .393 and .375 with running in scoring position.

#9 Grand Valley State set school four-game series records versus Gannon University for runs (61), hits (70), doubles (19), RBIs (58), total bases (110), batting average (.493), earned run average (0.96) and earned runs yielded (3)...1B Casey Robrahn hit .750 in four Laker victories last week over Gannon. Casey was 12-for-16 with 10 RBIs and five runs scored. Robrahn was 5-for-9 with three RBIs on Saturday, followed by a 6-for-7 showing on Sunday with seven RBIs...2B Josh Hillyard hit .588 (10-for-17) with nine runs scored, while RF Derek Hinke hit .563 (9-for-16) with five doubles, eight RBIs and eight runs scored. Hinke had 19 total bases in 16 at bats...The Laker pitching staff yielded nine runs, three of which were earned in 28 innings. Gannon managed just two extra-base hits (2 doubles) in 105 at bats...GVSU ended GLIAC action with a 42-6 record versus Gannon, including a current 22-game winning streak versus the Knights. Gannon’s last win versus the Lakers was the second game of the 2003 four-game series...GVSU went 25-1 all-time versus Gannon at the Laker Baseball Field, including 23 straight wins. Gannon last won a game at GVSU in the opening game of a four-game series in 1998.

Chargers
The Hillsdale College baseball team went through an 0-5 week, facing their toughest competition of the season…Tuesday, the team played at Division I Central Michigan University, and despite taking a 2-0 lead, ended up losing to the Chippewas, 16-8 … Saturday, the Chargers lost by a combined 24 runs to first-place Wayne State, but played the Warriors much tougher Sunday, losing two one-run games, both going to extra-innings…Hillsdale has lost four one-run games this season, while winning one…That one win came vs. Grand Valley, Hillsdale’s opponent this Tuesday … It will be the Chargers’ home opener…Hillsdale had been scheduled to play five home games already, but all have been wiped out due to weather…Freshman catcher Anthony Giarmo had his best game of the season in Sunday’s opener, going 4-for-5 against first-place Wayne State with 2 RBI…He had a team-best eight hits in the team’s five games last week…Hillsdale is scheduled to play 16 home games in a 14-day span, starting with Wednesday’s doubleheader against Grand Valley…Opponents during that stretch will include Mercyhurst, Northwood and Tiffin…The team’s only home games this season will take place during the next two weeks.

Lakers
The Laker baseball suffered through a seven-game losing streak before ending it with a 5-4 win over Saginaw Valley State on April 6. The streak was the longest by a Laker team since 2003. In the only Laker win of the week, Wes Craig picked up his team-leading third win of the season. He has held teams to two or fewer earned runs in five of his six appearances this year and in five-straight. James Ludwig pitched 1.2 innings, making his GLIAC-leading 16th appearance of the season. He also extended his streak of consecutive appearances without an earned run to 11. Senior John Morris came on to close the game and picked up his team-leading fifth save of the season and 18th of his career, which moved him past Nate Goodrich (1998-01) for first place on the Mercyhurst all-time saves list. Morris also set the single season saves record in 2006 with nine. Jamie Walczack had a hit in all five games during the week and his five-game hitting streak is the longest current streak on the team. On Friday, Joe Luli hit his first home run of the season and the 10th of his three-year Mercyhurst career. On Monday, the Lakers fell to Division I Canisius on a ninth-inning home run. It was the Lakers first loss in three games against Division I opponents this season. It was also their first non-conference loss at home. The homer came off Morris, who prior to that game was 4-for-4 in save opportunities and had allowed just one run in his seven appearances.

Timberwolves
The Northwood baseball team went 2-4 last week, sweeping Rochester College Wednesday before dropping four games to Findlay ... the Timberwolves are now 12-10 overall, 1-7 in the GLIAC ... Clay Rosette (Hartland, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves offensively for the week, driving in 10 runs in six games ... seven of Rosette’s RBI’s came in NU’s sweep over Rochester ... the Timberwolves travel to Saginaw Valley and to Aquinas this week before hosting Gannon in a weekend GLIAC series.

Cardinals
The SVSU baseball team improved its record to 16-7 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC play by taking three out of four games against Mercyhurst this past weekend…Reed Welker (Toledo, Ohio/St. John’s) hit two more home runs in game one against Mercyhurst, giving him a GLIAC-best six on the season…in four games, Welker drove in nine runs, giving him a total of 25 on the season, which leads the team and ranks him tied for seventh in the GLIAC…Welker also ranks third in the GLIAC in slugging percentage (.658)…Max Bell (Goodrich, Mich.) hit .500 in the Mercyhurst series with an on-base percentage of .714 and a slugging percentage of 1.125…Bell hit his first home run of the season against Mercyhurst in game one and then was walked six times during the rest of the series to give him 17 free passes for the season, the second best total on the team and the most in the GLIAC…Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) ranks first in the GLIAC in walks (27) and ranks second in the conference in on-base percentage (.527)…pitchers Andrew Doyle (Flint, Mich./Powers) (5-1) and Scott Roy (Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson) (5-0) both picked up their fifth wins of the season, tying them for the GLIAC lead…Doyle threw his second shutout of the season in the Cardinals’ 3-0 win over Mercyhurst Saturday…Doyle’s eight strikeouts kept him in the lead in the GLIAC with a total of 53 for the season…Doyle also ranks first in the conference in innings pitched (40.2), third in opponents batting average allowed (.218) and fifth in the conference in ERA (2.66)… Roy stayed undefeated for the season in SVSU’s 6-2 win on Saturdy…Roy currently is second in the GLIAC in ERA (2.25) and innings pitched (40)…Roy ranks third in the conference strikeouts (43) but first in the GLIAC in strikeouts looking (18).

Warriors
Despite three non-conference losses during the week at St. Joseph’s and Western Michigan, the Warriors rebounded to sweep Hillsdale over the weekend and remain unbeaten in GLIAC action … WSU’s 17 runs and 22 hits in Saturday’s opener against Hillsdale marked the team’s highest totals since 2005 … the Warriors’ 28 runs over Saturday’s two games was the most in a doubleheader since scoring 40 at Hillsdale on May 11, 2001 … Adam Kaminski (Clinton Twp., Mich.), who went 5-for-5 on Saturday, raised his season average from .263 to .417 … he batted a team-best .714 last week including a 10-for-13 clip against the Chargers … Charlie Dunneback (Lansing, Mich.) and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich.) each hit a grand slam Saturday, the first home runs of their respective WSU careers … Dunneback, who also smacked a solo shot Sunday, drove in a team-best eight runs in the series … Dane Little (Windsor, Ont.), the starter in Saturday’s 11-3 triumph, has lasted at least six innings in each of his last three starts (all wins) … prior to Sunday’s nine-inning game, Wayne State had not gone into extra innings with Hillsdale since 1990 … Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch to cap off a three-run ninth inning which erased a 6-4 Hillsdale lead … Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont.) drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning of Sunday’s finale with a base hit to extend his hitting streak to seven games … Wayne State had not played consecutive extra-inning games since 1989 ... Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) reached base in his 18th straight game with a base hit in the first inning ... Williams swiped two bags in each game Sunday to increase his season total to 16, already surpassing his total from last year and tying for the GLIAC lead … the Warriors will travel to Tiffin for a doubleheader Wednesday before heading to Findlay next weekend for a conference series.
