Ashland University
Eagles
Every game the Eagles play this coming week will be outside the GLIAC. AU hosts Slippery Rock on Wednesday (Apr. 2). AU trails in the series with SRU, 9-7. A year ago, Ashland defeated Slippery Rock, 10-4. This coming weekend, the Eagles will play Tiffin four times. Ashland holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series with the Dragons…Ashland was nine-for-nine in stolen base attempts in an 8-2 victory over West Liberty last week. Outfielder Tyson Rowland (Warren, OH/Warren Harding) had four thefts in the game. That’s one steal shy of the school single-game record owned by Rob Johnson. Johnson had five steals against Miami (OH) in 1991…senior outfielder David Quiroga (Toledo, OH/Owens Community College) has a 10-game hitting streak and has 13 multi-hit games. Last week, Quiroga hit .667 with a slugging percentage of 1.042. He had five multi-hit games last week. Ashland has three players hitting .400 or better. Quiroga is at .514, sophomore Ben Minard (Delaware, OH/Olentangy) checks in at .414 and sophomore Jacob Petkac (Middleburg Heights, OH/Midpark) is hitting .400…the Eagles have been successful on 89 percent (49-of-55) of their stolen base attempts. Rowland is 13-for-13 and Quiroga is 10-for-10…senior righty Simon Liston (London, ONT/Lakeland C.C.) has been effective so far starting and coming out of the bullpen. Liston is 2-0 with two saves. He has 26 strikeouts and seven walks in 29.1 innings and batters are hitting .223 against him. Liston has started four games.

Oilers
The Oilers finished the week with a 5-3 record and have now improved to 10-10 on the season…The Oilers also went 3-1 in GLIAC games during the week to improve to 6-2 on the season…Senior George Rohan led the way by hitting .515 with 15 RBI’s and ten runs scored…Rohan also tallied five doubles and two homeruns while stealing four bases…He is now hitting .329 on the season and leads the team in runs (16), homeruns (4), triples (3) and RBI’s (19)…He has also stole a team-high six bases…Junior Brian Sampsel is hitting a team-high .417 and leads the team with 13 doubles…On the mound, Ryan Rothenbuhler is throwing the ball well as he has a 2-0 record with a 0.61 ERA…He has started three games thus far and has thrown two complete games with one shutout…He also has a team-high 15 strikeouts…Caleb Meyer is also throwing well, checking in with a 2-0 record to go along with a 0.88 ERA…Josh Barney has already accumulated five saves and is four short of breaking his school record for saves in a season…He has 21 career saves, the top mark ever at Findlay.

Golden Knights
Gannon snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-0 shutout of Penn State Beaver last Sunday … it was the program’s first shutout since a 3-0 win against the University of Sciences in Philadelphia on March 3, 2007 … Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) and Eric Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) were Gannon’s top hitters last week, hitting .385 and .375 respectively .. . Evan Euler (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) tossed a complete-game shutout during a 4-0 victory over Penn State Beaver, lowering his team-best ERA to 2.89.

Lakers
Grand Valley State played 38 innings of baseball in its four-game series versus Saginaw Valley State. The first game went 11 innings on Saturday, followed by a seven inning second game. Sunday’s first game went nine innings, followed by another 11-inning game...Grand Valley State junior outfielder Matt Nickels hit .533 in four games versus Saginaw Valley State. Nickels was 8-for-15 with a double and a triple in the series. In addition, Nickels drove in the game-winning run in the Lakers’ 4-3 11-inning victory in Saturday’s first game.

Chargers
After a one-week delay, the Hillsdale College baseball team opened GLIAC play last week, going 2-4 in six straight road games vs. Grand Valley State University and the University of Findlay…The Chargers came very close to sweeping the No. 4-ranked Lakers in Allendale Wednesday, losing 7-6 in eight innings before winning a 5-4 decision…In the win, junior pitcher Scott Monterastelli got the win, allowing just four hits and three earned runs…He has two of the team’s seven wins this season. Monterastelli’s teammate at Waubansee Community College in Illinois, junior Jesse Smith, had hits in five of the team’s six games last week, batting a team-high .500 for the week…Hillsdale has seen eight games get cancelled due to weather already this season, including two doubleheaders against Saginaw Valley, scheduled at home March 21-22…Those games will not be made up…The Chargers face a challenging week this week, starting with Tuesday’s single game at Division I Central Michigan University at 3 p.m….Then, Hillsdale will head to Detroit for four weekend games against Wayne State University…Hillsdale won’t play at home until Wednesday, April 9, when it faces Grand Valley once again…Starting with that set of games, the Chargers will play 16 home games in a 14-day span, concluding Wednesday April 23.

Lakers
The Laker baseball team started the week by winning a pair of non-conference games against Clarion by scores of 9-7 and 4-0. The 4-0 win was the first shutout of the season by the Laker pitching staff. Sophomore John Iborg improved to 2-0 by allowing just three hits and striking out three through six innings of work. James Ludwig entered the game in the seventh for his first of two relief appearances on the week, giving him a GLIAC-leading 13 on the season. With Iborg’s six-inning effort, he moved to the team lead with a 2.31 ERA. The Lakers improved to 11-4 against non-conference opponents with the two wins, as well. The Lakers, however, were swept in a four-game series against Wayne State, marking the first time since 2006 that the team had dropped four-in-a-row. Wayne State blanked the Lakers in the first two games of the series, making it the first time since 2005 that the Lakers suffered two-straight losses by shutout. The previous occasion also came against Wayne State. It was also the third-straight conference game in which the Lakers had been shutout. In the two shutout games, the Lakers managed just four hits total. While scoring two runs in the seventh inning of both games three and four, the Lakers have managed nine runs in eight GLIAC games and have been shutout three times. Still, the Laker pitching has been turning in winning performances. The Laker pitching staff has a 3.53 team ERA in conference play and are allowing just 5.6 hits per game.

Timberwolves
The Northwood University baseball team opened GLIAC play by going 1-3 against Ashland … the Eagles won the first three games of the series before the Timberwolves earned a 7-2 victory in the finale … NU is now 10-6 on the season … the Timberwolves pitching did a solid job against a strong Ashland offense, finishing the weekend with a 3.86 ERA … NU’s starters were particularly strong, allowing six earned runs in 22 innings of work … Matt Toporski (Essexville, Mich.) struck out six while not allowing an earned run in a hard-luck 2-1 loss in game three of the series … Corey King (Bay City, Mich.) improved to 2-1 after allowing one earned run in six innings of work … Michael Goodwin (Midland, Mich.) led the Timberwolves’ offense, finishing the series with a .364 average … the Timberwolves will host Rochester Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader before hosting Findlay for a GLIAC series Saturday and Sunday.

Cardinals
The Cardinals finished last week 3-3 in games at Indianapolis and Grand Valley State to bring their record to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC play…Scott Roy (Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson) (4-0) picked up his fourth win of the season against Indianapolis, pitching six innings and allowing two runs while striking out two…Roy followed up that performance by going eight strong innings at Grand Valley, allowing three runs while striking out a season high 13 batters with only one walk in a no-decision…Roy is currently tied for first place in the GLIAC in wins (4) and second with an ERA of 2.12…Andrew Doyle (Flint, Mich./Powers) (4-1) struck out 12 batters at Grand Valley State to give him a team and league high 45 on the season...Roy is third in the GLIAC in strikeouts (37)…Reed Welker (Toledo, Ohio/St. John’s) is currently tied for first in the GLIAC in home runs (4) and leads the Cardinals in batting avg. (.348), hits (23) and RBI (16)…Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) hit his third home run of the season against Indianapolis and currently ranks first in the GLIAC in walks (21)…Peterson is also tied for third in the conference in runs scored (23) and ranks fourth in on-base percentage (.519) and stolen bases (12)…Danny Patterson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) and Kevin Schwedler (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) hit their first home runs of the season against Grand Valley…Jon Tibaudo (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) pitched 5.1 shutout innings in relief in three appearances during the week.

Warriors
Wayne State remained undefeated in GLIAC play following a four-game series sweep last weekend at Mercyhurst … the Warriors shut the Lakers out in both games Saturday, including a 1-0 win in the latter game … WSU’s last 1-0 win was April 9, 2005 against Mercyhurst, the first of two shutouts that day as well … Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) and Dane Little (Windsor, Ont.) each threw a complete game in their respective starts Saturday … until MC scored in the sixth inning of game three, Wayne State had not allowed a run in 24 straight innings … Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.), who homered in both games Sunday, has reached base safely in 11 consecutive games … he has raised his season batting average from .261 to .370 in that span … WSU has outscored its opponents 51-13 in its current eight-game winning streak … Wayne State has non-conference games scheduled this week, a doubleheader at St. Joseph’s on Tuesday and a nine-inning contest Wednesday at Western Michigan … the Warriors will host Hillsdale in GLIAC action this weekend.
