Weekly Notes
Ashland University
Eagles
Ashland went 10-4 in Fort Myers, FL. That’s the seventh time since 1998 that Ashland won 10 or more games in the Sunshine State during the spring trip. In 2006, the Eagles were 14-1 on the southern swing and in 2002 the Eagles were 12-2…sophomore outfielder Jacob Petkac (Middleburg Heights, OH/Midpark) tied a school, single-game record for hits when he went 6-6 against Southwest Minnesota State. The only other Ashland player to have six hits in a game was Gaylord Meininger against Wilmington in 1962…freshman pitcher Brad Thomas (Orrville, OH) won his first two collegiate starts, beating Lock Haven, 7-2 and East Stroudsburg, 11-3…senior righty Simon Liston (London, ONT/Lakeland C.C.) is off to a strong start, he’s 1-0 and has a pair of saves. Liston’s win was a route-going effort in an 11-3 win over Assumption…AU went 1-1 in regional play on the southern trip, losing to Saint Joseph’s (8-2) and beating Rockhurst (5-2)…a year ago, sophomore Ben Minard was solely a pitcher and tied for the team lead in wins (7). This year, he’s also getting a chance at DH and at first base. In his first 14 games, Minard is hitting .451 with a homer and five doubles and is second on the team in RBI (15)…Petkac leads AU in batting average (.458), hits (27), runs (20), doubles (9) and RBI (17)…weather forced the cancellation of the season-opening four games series with Grand Valley State at Donges Field. That means the entering this week, the Eagles haven’t played since Mar. 16.

Weekly Notes
Mercyhurst College
Lakers

Mercyhurst dropped three of four games against Findlay in its home opener to start GLIAC play. The Lakers are now 10-7 overall after a 9-4 start. Contributing to the losses was a rash of injuries that have hit the club. The Lakers were without the services of six regular starters during the weekend series, including four of its top five hitters and RBI men. Without them in the lineup, the Lakers managed just five runs all weekend and in the final game of the series, recorded just one hit. The pitching, however, was solid, keeping the Lakers in each game. In the last six games, Mercyhurst has allowed more than three runs just once and has averaged 2.6 runs and five hits allowed per game. Saturday, red-shirt sophomore Steve Grife went the full seven, allowed just two runs and recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts. In the Lakers only win of the weekend, senior John Morris recorded his team-leading third save of the game and the 16th of his career, moving him to within one of tying Nate Goodrich for first in Mercyhurst history. At the plate, the Lakers were led by Jamie Walczak, who was moved to centerfield after playing both third base and right field during the season. He went 4-for-7 with two runs, two RBIs, two walks, a stolen base, two hit by pitches, a double and a homer. He was the only Laker to reach base safely in all four games. His homer gave him a team-leading three on the season. It was also his first since hitting two in the season opener against Lynn on Feb. 22. Because of the injuries, pitcher John Mang, after pitching game two of the series, played in the field for the first time since 2006. He started the final two games of the series in left field. He went 1-for-3 with a run scored Saturday’s opener.
