The University of Findlay athletic department will participate
in “Pink Wave”, an event sponsored by the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in conjunction with the
Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) “Pink
Zone”, on Thursday, February 18 at the Oilers men’s and
women’s basketball games against Michigan Technological
University.
UF student-athletes, coaches and fans are encouraged to wear pink
in a show of support for breast cancer awareness. All fans who come
wearing pink will receive $2 off their price of admission and all
50/50 proceeds will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
In addition, local elementary students are participating in a
“Pink Wave” coloring contest and the UF dance team has
created a “Survivor” and “In honor of”
banners for fans to sign to show their support. The Oilers
cheerleaders will also give all fans pink ribbon temporary tattoos
and also support the cause by wearing pink for the game.
Findlay’s men’s and women’s basketball teams
will be wearing pink shoelaces and pink warm-up shirts for their
game against Michigan Tech University and a breast cancer survivor,
Jolene Mintey, will serve as an honoree coach for women’s
game.
The festivities are both educational and exciting as students will
receive Pink Zone giveaways and the University Health Center will
provide Breast Cancer prevention information. Fans will also be
able to bid on silent auction items.
The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as "Think
Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in
women's basketball, on campuses and in communities.
The women’s game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
followed by the men’s contest against the Huskies around 7:30
p.m.
