PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- On Saturday, Feb. 6, Lake Erie College
Athletics will be “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” as
part of the GLIAC’s Pink Wave and WBCA Pink Zone initiatives.
The Storm women’s and men’s basketball teams will host
Central State University that day beginning at 1 p.m.
Admission to the game is free, but donations will be accepted to
benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with the V
Foundation. In addition, fans will be able to purchase special
edition “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” t-shirts for
$5, compliments of Sports ‘N’ Sports, with proceeds
from those sales also going to the Kay Yow Fund.
Both Storm teams, as well as gameday and administrative staff,
will wear pink shooting shirts and pink accessories (shoe laces,
wristbands, headbands, etc.) to help raise awareness for breast
cancer research. The Storm women will play their game with a
special pink NCAA game ball. All fans attending the games are
invited to wear pink and join the cause.
Fans unable to attend can catch the action on ESPN 970 WFUN with
Craig Deas on the call.
The WBCA’s Pink Zone was started in 2007 as an effort to
raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on
campuses and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State
University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst
for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in
2006. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and
helped make the inaugural year a success. The 2009 campaign raised
over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than
1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools
break attendance records at their event.
