Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State will be hosting 'Think
Pink' night on Thursday (Feb. 4) at the GVSU-Findlay basketball
doubleheader, hosted by 48 West. All fans in attendance are
encouraged to wear pink to help raise breast cancer awareness and
show their support in the fight against breast cancer. The women's
game against the Oilers starts at 6:00 p.m. in Fieldhouse Arena,
while the men tip off at 8:00 p.m.
The first 100 GVSU students at the women's game will receive a
free Grand Valley State pink t-shirt from 48 West. There will also
be Qdoba tacos in between the games. Both men's and women's teams
will be wearing pink shoelaces, while the Laker women's team will
sport pink warm-up t-shirts before and during the game. The GVSU
coaching staffs will also be showing their support for breast
cancer awareness by wearing pink in their gameday attire.
GVSU's 'Think Pink' night is a variation of the Women's Basketball
Coaches Association's (WBCA) version of the 'Pink Zone'. The 'Pink
Zone' initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation
of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the
court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. More than 1,250
women's basketball teams and supporting organizations are
participating in some way during the 'Pink Zone' initiative in
2010. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)
is also committed to the fight against breast cancer by encouraging
support for the 'Pink Wave' campaign throughout its member league
institutions.
It is a big doubleheader for both teams, as Grand Valley State's
women's team is 14-5 on the year with an 11-3 record in conference
play, tied for second in the GLIAC. Findlay leads the South
Division with a 15-4 overall record and a 10-4 league mark. Earlier
this season, GVSU topped the Oilers in Findlay, 70-58. On the men's
side, it is a battle for first place, as Findlay owns the top
record in the league with 12-2 mark in conference play. The Oilers
are 16-3 overall and have won 13 straight games. Grand Valley State
leads the North Division with an 11-3 GLIAC record, while the
Lakers are 15-4 overall. UF won the first meeting this season,
70-57, in Findlay on Dec. 12, 2009.
