GVSU Leads GLIAC Presidents' Trophy Standings After Fall Sports Season

Bay City, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University is on top of the 2009-10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Presidents' Trophy standings after the Fall sports season. The GLIAC President's Trophy is awarded to the member athletics department that performs best throught each of the three sport seasons. Presidents' Trophy points are awarded on the basis of final conference standings and GLIAC postseason tournament performances.
The Lakers, who have claimed 11-straight GLIAC Presidents' Trophies, won GLIAC Championships in five of the league's eight fall sports. GVSU tallied 71.0 points on the strength of GLIAC titles in football, men's and women's cross country, men's golf and women's soccer. The Laker had a second-place showing in women's tennis and volleyball, and do not offer men's soccer as a varsity sport.
GVSU's men's sports total of 33.0 points, and women's sports total 38.0 points, where both bests among the GLIAC athletics departments.
Saginaw Valley State University sits in second place after the fall with 53.5 points. The Cardinals won the GLIAC volleyball championshp and posted second-place finishes in football, men's cross country and women's soccer this fall, while tying for fourth place in men's golf. SVSU's total of 28.0 in men's sports points and the 25.5 points earned by its women's teams were second only to GVSU.
The University of Findaly currently ranks third in the standings after a second-place finish in men's golf. The Oilers have totaled 42.0 (24.0 men's; 18.0 women's) points so far this year.
Northwood University took home the GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship, while Ashland University claimed the Men's soccer championship. The GLIAC Volleyball league title was shared by Saginaw Valley State University and Hillsdale College.
