Grand Valley State Remains In Top Spot of the Division II Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings

CLEVELAND – In the final winter Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, Grand Valley State (Mich.) has kept the overall lead with 728 points. In the Fall, the Lakers took home national championships in women’s cross country and women’s soccer and also placed third in men’s cross country and fifth in women’s volleyball. GVSU added a D-II Championship in women's indoor track & field, while placing seventh in men's swimming & diving, and finishing ninth in women's swimming & diving to add to its total score.

Shippensburg (Pa.) remains in second with 496.50 total points. Adams State (Colo.)has moved from sixth place to third and finishes the winter championships with 484 total points. Grand Canyon (Ariz.) sits in fourth place with 461.50 total points after having accumulated a winter-high 408.50 points.Central Missouri rounds out the top-five with 456 points.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) has set the pace by having three of its institutions currently in the top 10. Following third place Adams State (Colo.), is Colorado School of Mines in seventh and Western State (Colo.) in ninth.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has two schools currently residing in the top 10, as Ashland University jumped from 96th place after the fall season to eighth place. Three other GLIAC member institutions landed in the top 50 as Wayne State University (t-31st), The University of Findlay (40th) and Hillsdale College (47th) continued their impressive showings.
Three additional GLIAC schools, Northern Michigan University (59th), Ferris State University (86th), and Michigan Technological University (90th) are listed in the top 100 after the winter sports season.
All seven winter NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: women's swimming & diving - Drury (Mo.); men's swimming & diving - Drury (Mo.); women's indoor track & field - Grand Valley State (Mich.); men's indoor track & field - Abilene Christian (Tex.); wrestling - Nebraska Omaha; men's basketball - Bellarmine (Ky.); women's basketball - Clayton (Ga.).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's.
The first Division II and Division III spring standings will be released Thursday, May 27, 2011.
