BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and its 12 member institutions will observe a moment of silence in recognition of the passing of NCAA President Myles Brand prior to all conference athletics events from Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 20.

“The NCAA and its members will forever miss the student-athletes greatest advocate, President Miles Brand who lost his battle with cancer earlier this week," stated GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson. "Dr. Brand was a true friend to the student-athlete and Division II athletics. He helped redefine and forge initiatives in Division II that focused on the well being of the student-athlete and their educational experience with the concept of a balance that places emphasis on learning, service, passion, sportsmanship and resourcefulness. The GLIAC as well as everyone in the NCAA were very fortunate to have him serve as our leader.”

Brand, who was the first university president to serve as the NCAA's chief executive, passed away on Wednesday after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 67 years old.

Brand, who began his tenure in January 2003 after having served as president at Indiana and Oregon, died at his Indianapolis home. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2008 and announced his condition to the NCAA Executive Committee, the national office staff and the leadership at NCAA member schools in January, saying the long-term prognosis for his condition was "not good."
